Have you ever accidentally eaten your pets food?

Asked by RealEyesRealizeRealLies (30951points) February 28th, 2010

I did once as a teenager. I’d just fed the cat and got caught up in a conversation, completely forgetting I still had the fork in my hand. Mom asked me for the dishes after dinner and for some reason I automatically put the fork in my mouth to clear it off.

YAuLlK!!!

It wasn’t good. Have you ever had the pleasure? The reason I ask, is because Pitch’s new dog food actually looks and smells pretty good to me. I think I could serve it up on a sandwich to someone and they’d never know until they tasted it. I can’t bring myself to taste it. Do you know what it tastes like?

OK Yaull! Give it up! What do you mean, “not accidentally”?

DeanV's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Oh, come on. You’ve never been the least bit curious?

Cruiser's avatar

NO! I did serve Kibbles and Bits at a Halloween party as a snack and to my surprise it went pretty quick!

@dverhey
Like I said, Pitch’s new food looks tempting…

Not accidentally…when I was a child my dad would split a can of cat food with me. True story. This initial parental misstep resulted in my sneaking bites of dry food whenever I fed the family dog until I finally realized how disturbing my behavior was and broke the habit in my teen years. I’ve never admitted this before.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Oh, oops. Just read the description. I’ll give you a hint, though. It probably won’t taste very good. I wouldn’t recommend trying it unless you’re really hungry.

@jealoustome
Your FATHER would split a can of cat food with you?!?!?!?!?!

Whahhhh???

And you got hooked on the dry??!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Whahhhh????

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

@dverhey

You wouldn’t recommend the dry or the canned?

DeanV's avatar

Never had the canned. But the dry just tastes like sand mixed with spoiled gravy.

jealoustome's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies There are many other disturbing stories where that came from but that is for another thread…

And I DID break the habit. Not as bad as crack or smoking. :)

I did it on purpose a few times. It always smelled a lot better than it tasted.

My sister had a gumball machine that she put dog food in once (I have no idea why). Anyway, my mom’s boyfriend grabbed a handful in the dark once thinking a gumball machine would have some kind of candy in it. He was horribly wrong.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Not this time!! If you met my friends back then you would not be so surprised!! lol!

tinyfaery's avatar

Uhh…no. The smell alone would stop me from eating it.

polycinco's avatar

yes, well I have tried it, it’s not that bad

essieness's avatar

No, but I did watch my step-dad and step-brother eat Snausages once. That was humorous.

DarkScribe's avatar

No, but I can’t convince the dog of that. Every time I sit down to dinner he is sure that the food should have been his. He has perfected the “sad, hungry, badly done by dog look” but it never works with me. It works with the kids though – they share – against household rules though it is. Luckily they no longer live here and only visit on weekends.

I have actually…one time my mom brought home dog biscuits that were wrapped in colorful wrapping, I thought they were shortbread cookies..ate one, and after seeing I bit off part of a fire hydrant shape, and noticing the slight beef taste in my mouth, I realized what was going on. It actually wasn’t that bad!

Apparently, this writer agrees.

I tasted my cats’ dried cat food once to see what it was like.

Not half bad, but it numbs your mouth, kinda.

Once when I was a kid. My parents had a scoop of it in a bowl on the counter. I thought it was a bowl of Spanish peanuts. Oops.

I heard of an Asian person who moved to the States and found what they thought was cooked dog in the canned food section… Needless to say, they thought it was the worst dog they had ever eaten!
