How do I become a freelance writer? Any tips from veterans (or anyone) out there?

Asked by ArtiqueFox (974points) March 1st, 2010

I am considering becoming a freelance writer, but I really have no idea of how to go about it. I would appreciate any advice. :)

Do you have writing samples? Published work?

Do you have writing experience?

Get a copy of Writer’s Market (your local library may even have one). It’s the standard reference for freelance writers, with lists of magazines that accept freelance work (and those that don’t, so you know not to bother), what they’re looking for, and how much they generally pay for articles. They also have sections for other media.

Then, poke through it and see if any of it matches what you’re good at writing. Good luck!

get your work out there, create a blog, show people your work, send it to your friends, talk to different corporations and ask them if they would accept your work (:

1. Read.
2. Write.
3. Take a class.
4. Submit.
Learn something from each.
