How long will this cold last?

Bad cough, somewhat sore throat, coughing, sneezing. This is going through our family at a slow pace. How long will this keep going on?

My grandma Birdie Finkel said that no matter what you do, it is 7 days in and 7 days out. Treat the symptoms; rest, fluids, tea with honey (and possibly a jigger of rum), chicken soup, ice cream, ginger tea, Tylenol.
