I dreamed I got drafted. Is it possible?

Asked by majorrich (14741points) March 4th, 2010

Last night I dreamed I Got drafted into the Army, Which for me would mean coming out of retirement. At my age (49) is that theoretically possible? Would I resume at my former rank and MOS?
Is this an omen that I should go in and volunteer? I could go in my son’s place.

Lol…No…..you can’t even join any branch at that age. You shouldn’t put much weight on your dreams, either. There’s not even any speculation (from logical people) about a draft anytime soon.

Yeah I’d agree with @Blackberry, dreams can mean a lot of things, but they don’t predict the future. But then again, as they say, anything is possible.

Technically you might be. If you’ve been retired for less than 5 years and not a medical retirement. It’s extremely unlikely unless you have a unique skill combination (my retirement request last year was almost denied due to this). If this happens to me, I could dust off my Aspergers Syndrome diagnosis and be home free.

Sounds like you are worried over your son’s eligibility to serve…understandable.

You are too old. Thomas Jefferson said that Hector’s armor should not be worn by Priam, meaning that warriors should be young. Having said that, the two major laws in the 20th century that dealt with involuntary conscription were signed by Democrat presidents. We have a Democrat president right now who floated a trial balloon in the campaign about “national service”. Hmmm….

You can’t go home again…;)

I doubt we’ll ever see a draft again in this country and that’s a good thing. As far as rejoining the military at age 49, this could be feasible if they ever enact a Selective Service option for senior citizens but they wouldn’t be seeing much combat at that age probably.

@majorrich. To be perfectly clear too, I don’t see age 49 being in the senior citizen category either. That’s starts at age 80 or something doesn’t it? =)

Not unless all civilization collapse and and were thrust into some huge post apoclyptic conflict. Then you wouldn’t even be drafted. Wouldn’t be no government to draft ya, You would just be defending you last can of beans and your family. Sounds like fun :)

I recall cases in recent years where a few people over 50 were involuntary re-enlisted under stop loss .

No time to Google it right now.

It is possible for a draft to be reinstated in the event of a global war. For a government to even cosider drafting a 49 year old they would have to be very desperate and at that point it wouldnt make much of differentce.

I called the local recruiter and asked about my IRR time and IR re-activation and It seems they count me as 31 years old because of my 18 years of service. YIKES! Not that I mind much, I am still physically fit and ready to kick Afghani buttocks. I would lose two grades (so O-2) but would still fly my desk into action.

Or Not…lol

I agree with part of your dream, that the draft needs a comeback. but, you and i can forget being recalled. your too old and i am older than you. time to just sit back and relax and let the younger generation feel what its like to protect their and our freedom. we did our part, we did our time. can’t go back to sleep? then stay awake and i will have a cup of coffee with you here on Fluther.

Its it permissible to salute, while lying in bed? john

The US Navy canceled Grace Hopper’s retirement when she was sixty and she served until she was 80.

She was however the only military person who could ever honestly be called indispensable.

It is possible to dream you were drafted.

PacificToast's avatar

No, there’s no law that allows drafting yet, and you’re too old. But it’s always possible to dream something. Are you sure it wasn’t a nightmare?

CMaz's avatar

I am 45. I would join in a minute.

I should of when I had my chance. I kick myself ever day for not.

Jungian psychiatry typed dreams into particular categories of importance. It’s generally very rare to dream of the future, it happens but it’s unlikely. :)
