Where can i get a free internship opportunity for summer?

Asked by smile1 (493points) March 8th, 2010

Summer’s coming up, and I’m wondering where I can get some summer internships! (Im a high school junior)

I looked online, and all the ones i’ve seen cost from 4,000+...

I thought internships were supposed to be free?

But anywho, does anyone know a site I can go to, to get internships, for free? (Or even abroad…! That would be cool to get a feel for a different culture, but my family isnt in the best financial position to spend that much…)

What kind of internship are you looking for?

I have never found a free internship abroad. There are paid opportunities abroad, but they are competitive and are usually funded by research grants that require a level of education and experience you haven’t been allowed to obtain yet.

I got a travel grant from Travelocity via their Travel for Good program to volunteer on an Earthwatch program in Africa. You might look into that for the future.

Try SCA.org, Idealist.org, WWOOF, to name a few.

In competitive industries, internships are often not free. In less competitive fields, they will pay you a decent but meager wage, and sometimes offer benefits like housing or food or travel expenses.

You should also ask your high school counseler.

Also, you don’t have to leave the country to experience cultural differences. Even from state to state or across regions in the U.S. there are many readily observable differences.

You didn’t say what kind of work you were looking for…

As a high school junior, you’re probably not going to find “internships” but you can find volunteer opportunities. I you belong to a church, I would start there. Because you are under the age of 18, your choices will be very limited unless you try the church mission route. Even with that, there will be costs incurred for travel, and food/housing.

Is there a science center, nature center or zoo nearby that you could volunteer at? Logging 100 – 200 volunteer hours over the summer is a piece of cake, and you can use it on college applications, or for applying for paying jobs as work experience.
