Do you feel that a braggart is confident, or are they just insecure?

Asked by jonsblond (43667points) March 10th, 2010

I never understood this. If you are confident, I see no reason to boast about it. Isn’t it just a sign of insecurity?

Insecurity, indeed.

I like to think of a braggart as someone trying to make up for a very short tool.
I can almost tolerate the babbling when I picture it. It makes me smile.

“I never brag”, he bragged.

Bragging is a sign of insecurity.

Bragging is such a sign of insecurity. If you feel confident in yourself and abilities, there’s no need to brag or tell everyone how wonderful you are. People will figure it out eventually.

It is most definitely a sign of insecurity and alot of fun to listen to.I always tell them they are the best and those jeans don’t make them look fat.

I know what you mean, I picture it too! ;)

Definitely insecure. That’s why I never, ever brag. I’m pretty much the best at not bragging.

Insecure to the fullest. I know alot of braggers…seems to me like they’re always fishing for compliments and approval, which in my opinion, you wouldnt need if you were truly happy with yourself

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities – And it comes so natural to you. ;-)

But if I don’t tell everyone, how will people know how awesome I am?

ragingloli's avatar

Both. Do not assume that only one option can be true for everyone of them. They may be insecure. But they might as well just be narcissist.

I am no where near confident. I have not one bit of it and I am very insecure. I used to have a good friend was very beautiful and she really knew it, and she wasn’t insecure.

Apologies for being so quiet on my own question. I appreciate all of your answers. Thank you!

I’m a woman of few words. Not something I like to brag about. ;)

@Dibley – “I am no where near confident.” A rather confident statement. :-)

@wilma Yep. I figure the same thing for guys riding loud Harleys. Who has the bigger balls – the guy riding a Harley on the highway or the one riding a Moped?

davidbetterman's avatar

It really depends on the subject matter.

If you need agreement as to what confidence is well that seems self revelatory.

I don’t assume bragging is confident or insecure but more arrogance.

Some are confident, some are insecure, all are tiresome.
