Do I need to dry clean my suit before I get it tailored?

Asked by palbertq (258points) March 13th, 2010

Papa’s got a brand new suit. 92% wool, 8% cashmere. Do should I get it cleaned before I get it tailored in case there is any shrinking?

A suit that nice should certainly have been made out of preshrunk fabric. Good lord.
But if you’ve been wearing it much, it should be cleaned so that the tailor’s contact with it will be pleasant. Especially the tailor’s contact with the pants.

Yes. Not for shrinking, maybe – but the seams will turn out better.

Your question is just the opposite in the order of things. having an alteration is going to wrinkle your clothes, so why bother.

Alterations first, dry cleaning second.

Dry cleaning normally will not shrink a mans suit. at least i have never had this problem.

Brand new suit needs to be altered first.

The point of drycleaning is that it doesn’t alter the shape/size of a garment, so wait until afterward to dryclean it.

Come to think of it… if this is brand new – any good tailor will take care of it as is.

Update: i have discussed this situation with my wife and she suggests that you call the cleaners and ask this question for this reason: the suit is 92% wool and there is a possibility of shrinking. since i have never had a wool suit, my previous answer may be incorrect. sorry, john

Yes, but it will not normally shrink.

the store should offer free tailoring on a new suit. don’t dry clean first.

I would do it first…ahhhh cashmere :)

I just called the tailor to ask. He said shrinking shouldn’t be a problem if I take it to any decent dry cleaner (that uses less than 2% water) so I should just bring in the suit as is.

Thanks Guys!
