How hard is it to build bookshelves?

I’m a moderate do-it-yourself -er, but I have no real woodworking skills. I want to put in (faux) built-ins with an almost Asian design (not just a flat surface straight across). Can a relatively intelligent person figure it out? Can I realistically do this myself or will I be wasting wood? Should I get a professional?
