General Question

I need to know the dirt cheapest way to get from Brattleboro VT to NYC.

Asked by momus (19points) March 15th, 2010

I hope to travel between Brattleboro VT and NYC a lot next fall, so I need a way to cut down on gas prices. I don’t travel much (read: at all) so I could really use some help. I’ll take bus, train, whatever, and I’ll gladly transfer mid-route.

Comfort isn’t so much of an issue for me (though it may be for others, so give me fair warning.) Speed is an issue, but it comes up second to cost.

Also, on trips from Brattleboro to NYC it’s possible for me to drive home to the Amherst / Northampton of MA, leave my car and catch a bus or a train from around there, if that could somehow lessen the cost.

If any of you are willing to help me out I’ll be much obliged.

Best,

How much of an issue is speed? There’s hitchhiking.

Walking is the cheapest.

@silverfly I thought of that, but since you’d need (at least) water, it would end up costing more than hitchhiking, which is also “free”, and faster.

Driving is probably going to be the cheapest way, unless you want to hitchhike or walk, neither of which I would advise. Would it be possible to do some kind of ride share thing? Can you find anyone else who will be traveling a lot between Brattleboro and NYC with whom you can share the ride and expenses? That might be worth looking into.

Thanks for the advice, I doubt I’ll find anyone else going but it never hurts to ask around.

You could go online and try one of those ride sharing sites. My grandson was able to find a one time ride that worked out. I don’t know about regular commuting.

Craigslist Ride Share. Also, consider the $10/$15 China bus from Washington, DC to NYC.

There is a Peter Pan bus from Northampton to NYC but it costs around $40 each way, so not exactly dirt cheap. If you could drive to Boston you could get the Fung Wah bus (formerly called the chinatown bus, but I believe it may also leave from the main bus station in Boston) and it’s only $15 each way. Another option is to look and see if there are college ride boards in the Northampton area – I bet some of the schools there (amherst, UMass, Smith, Hampshire, etc) might have local ride boards where students share free rides in exchange for sharing the gas/toll costs. Good luck!

@momus: After you make the trip get back to us with how you did it and the amount.

I’ll probably take on passengers and charge them $10—$15 bucks for transportation. That could bring the costs down fast.
