What happened to my Mac?

Asked by bhec10 (6458points) March 16th, 2010

I installed Parallels and Windows XP on my Mac yesterday and this morning I noticed that the dark colours weren’t showing up properly. Instead, there were some fluorescent flashing green stripes. My laptop seems to be working fine, the only thing that’s not right are the colors.

This is what it looks like:

I’m not even sure if you can see it or if it’s just a problem of mine.
What could have caused this and how can I get it fixed?

Thanks in advance

I don’t think your links are correct. Might want to fix that.

@dverhey It works on mine.. What other site do you suggest, for me to upload the photos?

Bizarre. They work now. Never mind.

It’s your display, I can see nothing like that in the screenshots. It sounds like a graphics card failure/problem. Is your computer really hot? Did it get really hot? Try shutting it off completely and letting it ‘chill out’ for an hour, and then reboot. I don’t think it’s related to parallels, unless you only notice the stripes when parallels is running.

Yup, gotta be the display itself or the power inverter for the display. It wouldn’t be the graphics card, because that would be ‘printed’ on the screen and should show up in a screen capture.

Give Apple a call.

@hudsong and @justn Yeah it got really hot. Something like 81ºC (177 F)! I just reopened my laptop because I came back from university and now it’s fine because it had time to chill while it was in my backpack. Thanks for that, and I hope it’s just the graphics card that got really hot and nothing more serious.

@bvdshec17 That heat could have definitely done it. LCDs don’t take to the heat real well, but they will usually go back to normal once they cool down.

aside: I once left a digital wrist watch on the dash of my truck to charge (yeah it has solar panels on it) during the summer and when I came back after working for the afternoon the display was completely black. After it cooled down it returned to normal.

@justn Yeah, I’ve just checked the pics again and they look fine. Now I know I have to keep the laptop cool.

I think it is inverting your colors. This will not show up in screenshots. You can do Control + Option + Command + 8 to invert them. Or http://i.imgur.com/HIHwy.png. This is part of Universal Access.

@johnpowell Thanks! Looks really cool when I invert the colors.
