Why don't four year handicap placards last only about a year in the sun?

They get real brittle after about a year or so and fall apart? Dumb question?

Are you talking about the ones you hang on your mirror? If so, you are only supposed to hang them while you are parked in a handicapped spot. You aren’t supposed to drive with them on your mirror which would extend the life of your placard if you put it in your glovebox while driving or if parked in a non-handicapped spot.
