Why haven't more Bob Dylan songs been covered by hip hop artists?

Asked by Mamradpivo (9665points) March 18th, 2010

I feel like a lot of Dylan’s lyrics would really lend themselves to a hip hop cadence. What would you want to hear? Any idea why Dylan hasn’t been widely covered?

Let’s give a silent thanks that that’s so.

Because most hip hop artists have absolutely no taste in good music.

Yeah, I’m gonna have to agree with the above. Let’s not ruin Bob Dylan’s legacy with hip hop covers. But then again, I don’t like hip hop so I am being biased here. Some people might find them better than the original.

@ChaosCross what/who would you define as these “most hip hop artists” because now-a-days the definition of hip-hop is so misunderstood that I’m curious as to who you would define as an “hip-hop” artist.

I like Bob Dylan’s music as it is. No need to ruin it. Dylan’s music has nothing to do with hip hop music and we should keep it that way.

I’m glad that no hip hop artists covered/sampled him.
I mean no disrespect to hip hop artists but I’d like to leave classics and originals as is, we don’t need anyone killing the song.
There are way too many songs out there being butchered by other musical artists.

Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas actually did “forever Young”.. one version by himself one with bob. That one was actually pretty damned cool.

@Dr_C on an album?

The issues and attitudes [to say nothing of the Zeitgeist] Dylan used to such effect are not necessarily the issues or the attitudes that today’s hip hop performers seek to express.

Dylan lyrics tend to be observant

Hip Hop lyrics (the corporate / FM / Rhymesayers / Popular etc types but certainly not all or even most) are heavy on complaining and sex.

And so because of this I agree with the explanation provided by @anartist.

Although I agree that Dylan’s songs would work great as hip hop songs, but only when done by hip hop artists who feel the lyrics and meaning. And those artists may or may not be out there.
