Is The National Society of High School Scholars legit?

Asked by Parrappa (2428points) March 19th, 2010

I got a postcard in the mail today from the The National Society of High School Scholars (http://www.nshss.org) and I’m torn whether or not it’s a legitimate program worth joining. It says you need to have atleast a 3.5 GPA to join, which I do, but I’m not convinced that it’s actually going to help me. You have to pay $60 to join thats why I question whether or not it’s actually a good thing to join or not. Anyone know anything about this?

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of it… I’m guessing no.

Nope. My daughter was “invited to join” and after much research… it’s a rip off. Sorry!

I can’t say for sure, but it’s almost certainly a scam.

I’m a “member” and it hasn’t done me a lick of good.

So no.

Well that’s enough convincing for me. Thanks everyone.

You never have to pay for these kinds of things. If you do, it’s a scam.

Scam. Did they try to sell you a book with your name in it?
I’m glad you didn’t send them the money.

Is this the one where you get your name in a book? Either way, no. You are basically paying $60 for one more thing on your list of awards, and I have a feeling you might have some more meaningful content of that list.

Sounds like it is trying to pass itself off as either the National Honor Society or the National Merit Scholarship. both of which are arguably prestigious. I would shy away from it.

It can“t be that bad. I got the letter and postcard as well and I looked on the BBB. it gave it a rating of an A-. So it can’t be so terrible.

It seems like this would be worth it for someone who knows they’re very high up in academics for High School. Then you would legitimately have a chance at a scholarship or something. i.e. top of your class attending at least a moderately academic school.

My son became a member and won a $500.00 scholarship! We also went to a member event where we met college admissions specialists. We learned alot. It was pretty amazing!
