What did I see on the water?

Asked by mowens (8403points) March 20th, 2010

Last year, I was boating. I saw this guy in the distance, on something small, with (seemingly) no engine. The guy would fly up into the air, then fall back down. He went up maybe 10, 20 feet in the air! It looked fun! I think it was windsurfing, but I couldn’t find a video of it online. Thoughts?

Was it kite surfing? You may want to skip ahead a bit in the video. I like the part at 4:35.

It does sounds like kite-surfing. Did he have a big piece of fabric in front of him? In wind-surfing, you are standing on a board holding on to a sail but you don’t go up in the air; in kite surfing, the “sail” is in the air and lifts you up periodically.

Thats it I think!!!! Do I need a boat to do this? Has anyone ever done it?

Here’s a good link. There is also a wikipedia article about it. You don’t need a boat but you do need a kite-board. I haven’t done it but have seen it near my house in Florida. It looks like a lot of fun!

Yeah it’s kite surfing I am doing it currently. Well not as I am typing here of course. When I read your topic I thought at first it was a mystical psychic experience you were trying to fathom from afar. It sounded hilarious.
