Help with a 1040x?

Asked by Gruz06 (811points) March 22nd, 2010

Okay, so I filed a 1040EZ over a month ago with TurboTax and for some reason it listed my filing status as 1 Single. I am a single student, and my parents still claim me on their taxes. My mom was filling out my parent’s taxes when she realized that she couldn’t claim me because mine were filed with my status being 1. That being said, I was told I needed to fill out a 1040X and it is very confusing. Do I need to go through with this process or can she still claim me as a dependent the way things are now?

If you file as a single head-of-household then you have access to certain deductions the government makes for people trying to stick it out on their own. If your mother then claims you as a dependent, she also receives certain deductions for running a household, which is a tad unfair.

You both risk being audited, more so your mother if you’re over 18.

I’m still in high school and under 18.
