What is hdtv tuner?

Asked by joon1986 (185points) March 23rd, 2010

Hi,
I have been doing some research on monitors and found some monitor has built in hd tuner(or digital tv tuner)
here are my questions about them…
1) do I need to have some kind of tv cable service (like cogeco, bell, or something)??
2) does it require PC to be connected in order to watch a tv?
3) is there a monthly fee that I need to worry about? (in other words, do i need to subscribe to some kind of service?)
4) how many channels are available?? or does it depends on my tv cable services if required?

I thought I know most of basic tech stuffs but this is pretty new field to me and it would be nice if someone can help me out

HD tuner means that you can hook up a cable to the monitor and watch TV.

1. No. US airwaves are digital now, you get basic TV with a tv tuner.
2. No.
3. No. Limited channels though.
3. Depends on cable service. Otherwise you get public channels.

Hope this helps and I’m not wrong.

If the monitor itself contains an HDTV tuner, then you don’t need the PC on, just the monitor, and you will be able to watch normal, over the air broadcast television for free, just like on any TV. That’s pretty much it. Digital TV has replaced analog broadcasts now, so it’s just TV, how many channels depends on where you are, there will be more than there were regular broadcast channels before digital, probably around double or a little more than double, but a lot of them are crap. I get the major networks, a CW channel, a new channel I can’t remember the name of that shows old movies, a non-network affiliated channel like the old UHF channels, two sort of continuous weather/news stream channels, and about eight different PBS channels. So that’s 17 channels, 15 with actual programming and not just recycled weather and news.

or cable box. That’s the short answer

I get 29 over the air stations. I would say 10 are “crap” stations.

And just for the record. HDTV and Digital are the same thing.

Also what everyone has said so far. :-)

There is still plenty of broadcasting, over the air and via cable, which is Standard Definition (SD), 480i.

It is digital., but not HD.

But you do need an antenna, right?

Snarp's avatar

@anartist Yes, you need an antenna.

And a cheap antenna may work great. I have plain old rabbit ears like this

If you have weak signals, you may need something better.
