General Question

I need advice about a sleeping problem.

Asked by faye (17857points) March 24th, 2010

After 4–5 hours, I always have to pee. I keep my eyes mostly shut, lights off, to trick myself. I crawl back into my warm bed and toss and turn- makes me crazy. Anyone have any tricks I can try?

Sleeping problems are quite complicated, and frankly I don’t think you’re going to get great advice here. There are a lot of things that can cause sleeping disorders, all very different. If you can, I’d advise you to seek medical advice.

Do not consume any liquids for 2 hours before bed..that should help you stay asleep for at least a few extra hours.

Always remember to go to the toilet before you hop in bed at night. Make it routine.

What Rarebear said. There are so many possible answers that you need to have someone with the proper tools and training diagnose this.

Rarebear's avatar

@WestRiverrat Exactly. I have the proper tools and training, and there’s no way I can diagnose this over the internet.

I do the 2 pees before bed and have restricted water but it just means I wake up to pee drops! I have been to my doctor- he gave me zopiclone years ago.

@Rarebear and @WestRiverrat No one’s asking anyone to diagnose, maybe just to give advice or share personal experiences that may helpfully relate to the question asker’s situation.

I think the issue is not the sleep but the frequent urination.
Your doctor should be able to help you with this. I think there are new meds that can help.
Seriously I would see my doctor if I were you.

Kegel exercise?

faye's avatar

@Dog Doesn’t everyone wake up in the night to pee? Lucky sods.

Dog's avatar

@faye I only had that problem when I was pregnant.

I wake up to eat chocolate, peeing is an afterthought if at all. lolol

Stop fighting it. The more you let it bother you the worse it will become. Welcome the opportunity to do what is natural as the sleep you desire. Crawl back into bed and try this relaxation technique.

Lay on your back and do 17 slow measured belly breaths…instead of sheep jumping they are slowly stepping over you. If you are still awake roll onto your right side and repeat the slow breaths and sheep stepping over you 17 more times….and if you are still awake roll on your left side, your heart side and repeat. I have only twice made it to the left side!

Coloma's avatar

What if you don’t like sheep?
I’d prefer to think of 17 naked men slowly stepping over me? hahaha

@HTDC It is easier to come up with something that will work if we know why she is having the symptoms she is.

Check to see if you have elevated blood sugar level, (a telltale sign of diabetes) that would cause you to go more often than usual, even if you didn’t have much to drink.

faye's avatar

No, just had blood work done, all fine. I’ve always had to wake up to pee but I’ve been able to slip right back into sleep.

faye's avatar

@Coloma If I thought of 17 men stepping over me, sleep would not be on my mind! But I’ll try your way @ cruiser.

WestRiverrat's avatar

You may just need to adjust your sleeping patten then. Instead of going right back to bed, find something you can do for 30 min to an hour. Then go back to bed.

You can wear depends.

faye's avatar

Ewww! I’d still wake up from the urge to go. Reminds me of that lady astronaut!

Rarebear's avatar

@HTDC I’m saying what I’m saying because there are some potentially serious causes of sleep difficulty (such as obstructive sleep apnea). I am concerned when someone asks for advice for a medical problem when there can be potentially serious consequences and I always try to pipe up and say when I think it’s important to seek medical professional help.
