How do you Take Care of your parents when They dont have insurance and you're poor?

Asked by joscketSeper (323points) March 24th, 2010

Some americans have parents that have health insurance and stuff.
My parents dont have. and i dont have a great job either. I dont even have insurance.

So what happens if they get some serious illness or injury..
Take out more loans and then i’m in debt forever?( since i already have school loans etc that don’t seem to go down). I’m not the only child but i’m the only one that lives close. the others live in other states

Apply for Medicare and/or Medicaid now, even if they don’t need medical attention yet. Getting a number assigned to them will make it easier for them to access medical attention, which includes transportation services relating to medical appointments.

Are they old enough for Medicare (65)? If not, are they low income enough to qualify for Medicaid? If they are neither, contact the council on aging in your state (In my state it is called the StateXX Council on Aging). They will help you find a solution. My state has foundations that fund medical care for people who are too young for Medicare and have too much income for Medicaid.

It’s going to be interesting to see how the health-care reform changes your question down the road.

Just a thought.

You are not financially responsible for your parents. The greatest help a child can give a parent with medical problems is to be their advocate, keeping track of the paperwork. keeping notes of medical instructions, setting up prescripyion schedules and helping with appointments

How old are they? If they are not eligable for Medicare they may be eligable for Medicaid if they are disabled and can’t work. If not, until the healthcare bill is fully funded they will have to get their medical care from emergency rooms. Hopefully their mess won’t be to expensive because you will still have to buy them.
The hospital will try to get YOU to accept responsibility but you don’t have to. It might put them into bankrupcy but you don’t have to let ALL of you go bankrupt.
Hopefully, they will be covered by the efforts of Healthcare Reform before they have any life threatning illnesses.
