Best Linux distro for this laptop?

Asked by Ammolite (72points) March 29th, 2010

I’m currently using Ubuntu, and it runs at a moderate pace, but I’m wondering if there’s something out there that will run faster but still have a nice GUI. I’m comfortable working in terminal, and definitely need the option to customize things, but I definitely don’t turn my nose up at ease of use and a nice, intuitive interface.

For instance, apt-get is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.

Here’s the laptop I’m using: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-PCG-K35-Laptop-Pentium-Processor/dp/B000625D8G

Any suggestions?

You can install Arch and have Gnome as your window manager (same as default ubuntu).

Arch will run a lot faster.

I have some old systems with DLS (Damn Small Linux). It does have apt-get but the feature set might be too low for your liking and I am not sure how well supported it is. It is FAST.

You could go for something with LXDE as its GUI – that should speed things up considerably.

Arch + LXDE should fly…

The best combination of performance, usability and aestetics is, IMHO, Xubuntu, hands down.

@Vincentt I concur. All of the greatness of Ubuntu with the lightness and speed of Xfce!

The link to the laptop didn’t work. I was going to say xubuntu. However memory restraints is the problem maybe try DSL (damn small linux).
