I just bought Final Fantasy 13. Did I waste my money?

Asked by silverfly (4055points) March 29th, 2010

I bought FF13 over the weekend, but haven’t played it very much. I’m not really a Final Fantasy guru; I just want something other that first person shooters for a change. Has anyone else played this game? Is it worth the money?

If you like it, it is worth the money.

Eh, money comes and goes.

I would suggest that you look to older games if you are worried about the money. I don’t believe that the games which are now $5 used are any more or less fun than the new ones. For instance, I think I might enjoy FF2 for the NES more than a new one just released. If you truly believe that the old games are as fun (*as I do) then buying a $70 game is normally a waste of money compared to the 14 $5 games you could have bought.

PS: I don’t play games much at all now.

I should have put a disclaimer… Only respond if you’ve played the game. :) Does anyone have opinions on whether or not they liked this game?

I’ve only played Final Fantasy XII for the DS. I liked it, even though I haven’t finished it, it has nice graphics.
Oh, and no I don’t think you’ve wasted your money.

My husband is currently playing this. He seems to be enjoying it as he can spend most of the weekend on it if he doesn’t watch himself! It’s definitely different than a first person shooter. More story behind it, which I think is cool. As a spectator, I enjoy the graphics and story. The move from cut scenes to battle is better than FF XI or FF XII. IMHO, that is!

You can never go wrong with Final Fantasy. I just wish they would make a PC version.
I do not want to buy an expensive console for just 1 or 2 games that I would like to play.

I’m currently PLing in Chapter 11 and enjoying it plenty. It’s a different path for the series, much more linear, which took some time to get used to. The graphics and CS’s are pretty remarkable. I’ve found the character development and story entertaining. I have a couple gripes about perspectives and about character positioning during battle, the latter of which just got me killed, but overall I’ve logged about 70 hours and have found it well worth it. That said, I’m not much of an FPS fan and I’ve yet to play a FF game I didn’t enjoy so I’m a bit biased. Even my wife has shown passing interest, which is highly unusual… can’t say for sure if that’s a good or bad sign, but I’m leaning to good, since she’s not telling me I’m playing too much yet.

As to whether you wasted your money, only if you think you did.

It’s really good. The thing about ff games is you don’t get the full experience until a few hours in, because the battles get too complicated if you try to experience it all at once. The game actually has tutorials as you go along and gets better very quickly. I’m maybe 6 hours in and it’s gotten a LOT more fun since the beginning (ff games last anywhere between 40–100 hours first play through depending on your skill. Since you’re new, I’d expect you to finish around the 70-something hour mark if you don’t use a guide) Generally you get big feelings of accomplishment at the end of ff games.

I’ve played all of the FF’s since 7 and except for 8 which i couldn’t stand anymore I finished or got close to the end for all of them. (7 was borrowed had to return it)

Also yes it’s very linear but being new to it that should actually help you adjust.

Of course you did. But that doesn’t mean that you won’t have fun.

Wasting money is an opinion truly your own, I think you should play the game a little further before deciding that one.

My boyfriend got me the game a couple weeks ago and I’ve only gotten about an hour into the game. Very linear, beautiful graphics, interesting plot (so far) and the characters are pretty creative as well.

The game is something outside of your “first person shooter games”, but it still has a bit of action in it that you might like. Though again, that is your opinion.

Play the game for a couple hours (most Final Fantasy games take a couple hours to get into) and see how you take it from there. If you don’t like it, there are some game stores that will buy used games for a decent prince, and Final Fantasy 13 is going for a good price right now.

It’s good. You’ll have a fun time mixing/matching different character classes and weapon upgrading. It somehow manages to be different from every FF ever made and, at the same time, be exactly the same as every FF ever made. As the others have said, play it for a little while and see if you’re enjoying it.

On the other hand, as you’re apparently still pretty early in the game, I’d say the game opens up in a huge, huge way near the 25–30 hour mark (as opposed to the almost grotesquely linear path you make through the first 25–30 hours). Personally, I thought it disrupted the pacing of the game, but that’s just me. So, did you waste your money? I’d say no. FF is a pretty big deal in the industry and most people, whether they like it or not, tend to eventually play the latest FF. It’s become one of those “if you like video games, you’re going to at least try to play this and keep it in your collection” sort of games.

Just to tell you what point of reference I’m coming from, I’ve pretty much played/completed every Final Fantasy since the first one minus the Crystal Chronicles series.

Before buying a game you might want to rent it first (GameFly,Gamerang, Gottaplay etc) or play it online
Every single time I like a new game,I usually lose interest within a few days.
A few weeks ago I liked Plants & Zombies I played it online nonstop for 2 days thru WildTangent now I’m sick and tire of it,thank God I did not waste $20 to purchase it.

I don’t know. Did You? Do you enjoy the game. the purpose of video games is to entertain you. If it does that then you didn’t wast your money.

silverfly's avatar

@Mikelbf2000 You’re killin’ me. :) Gotta read the description.

Mikelbf2000's avatar

@silverfly oh yeah lol. Sorry about that. I guess you might enjoy it. It’s turn based RPG. Lot’s of people love it. Some don’t. Give it a try you might love it.

I rented the game and played it for about 2 or 3 days. The game has got some good and bad qualities to it, at least in my opinion. I’ll start with the pro’s:

- The game is just built beautifully, as far as visuals go. The world isn’t as wacky and wild as some of the others and it actually feels a lot like the earlier final fantasy’s. A good thing if you liked 7 or any before that.

- The characters are awesome. Each one of them seems like a person and not just your average stock party-filler. You begin to know their personalities and you become more and more interested in their back story and overall objective as the game progresses. The main character was my favorite.

- Although I didn’t get too far into it, but it seems like the battle system eventually has some pretty cool elements to it.

- The leveling-system is a little bit easier to follow than the recent FF leveling trends.

Con’s:

- Linear. Granted, I’ve only gotten about 10–15 hours into the game, but it was a long and 10–15 hours. You pretty much run in a straight line and fight battle after battle until you make it to the boss or a cut-scene. Repeat. I discovered that the only reason I put myself through all of the mundane battles was to see the next cut-scene.

- The battle system starts out very elementary and the game walks you through about 15+ hours of tutorials, until finally all of the battle system-options are unlocked and you actually feel like you’re in full control of you and your party’s abilities. This gets very, very boring. There’s an “auto-attack” feature and eventually you start just mashing that and healing when necessary. Repetitive, although later on the game does seem to slowly flow back into your traditional tactical final fantasy-battles.

Overall, I think the game is unique. I’d like to play more of it and give it more of a chance – but the only thing that really draws me to it was the story. If it were a movie, I probably would’ve enjoyed it a lot more. The battles were way too repetitive/took too long to open up so by the time you got to the good battles, you were already sick of fighting the stupid ones and only really just wanted more story. Everyone gets their own unique “summon” that you’ll have to fight to acquire which was my favorite part about the battles. Other than that, it’s a game you really have to play to see whether or not it fits your style.

I enjoyed it. It’s not the most traditional FF, but then again look at the last few numbered games in the series. Just my 2 cents.

tifa's avatar

it was enjoyable as a typical rpg, but i think it’s not as great as other final fantasies only because we’ve become picky over the years of rpg gaming and have the highest of expectations and this one may not have delivered the big wow we are used to getting from Squaresoft/Enix
