Is google in danger of getting too big and powerful?

Asked by cytonic_horus (429points) March 31st, 2010

With their continued arguments with the Chinese government and stories about further expansion into other fields is Google becoming too big with too much say?

I am really not sure why I prefer Google, habit? the look of it. I also tried Bing for some reason it didn’t stick. I guess the winner takes it all?

How are they getting “bigger” with “too much to say”? It’s a search engine, dude!

Let me see,Gooooooooooooogle.Signs point to yes.

if you think they are just a search engine maybe use them to search out more about them? they are way beyond just being a place for you to go and enter some dodgy searches cletrans

I’m not sure it’s possible to get too big any more. Microsoft was on the top of the heap and along comes Google, starting from nowhere to become today’s behemoth. Before there was IBM and General Motors and Standard Oil.

Something unexpected will come along to unseat Google, eventually. Who knows? It might come from China. I don’t know what calculation Google made in deciding to refuse to censor. They are, afaik still in China. It doesn’t really look like they are big enough to stand up to China, anyway.

So my answer is No. It’s not yet time to worry about Google, and that time may never come, given current events.

I prefer to think that the Chinese government has gotten too big.

But that’s just my schtick.

“Don’t be evil!”

One of Google’s corporate philosphy points says “You can make money without doing evil”. Given that they made $6.5 billion last year maybe we should be worried.

they already are too big and powerful. during the US presidential elections, both candidates used youtube. owned by google. at any moment they liked they could have censured one and not the other. not forgetting that currently they are helping china to censure their internet. some how that does not sit well with their slogan “dont be evil”.

This is a list of products developed or owned by Google.

Let’s see. You can chat, look up directions, watch videos, read books, go shopping, manage photos, manage your calendar, check stocks, do research, find images, look up patents, translate languages and check the news, and much more, all without leaving Google. They even have their own Q&A site. Now the question is when they’re going to stop being satisfied by monopolizing just the digital world and start taking over the real one.

Don’t worry about Google’s arguement with China until Google gets the bomb.

cytonic_horus's avatar

@ParaParaYukiko so if Microsoft is seen as having the monopoly on operating systems due to Windows is Google fast becoming the online equivalent?

ParaParaYukiko's avatar

@cytonic_horus I wouldn’t put it out of the realm of possibility. It’s been a little more than a decade since Google’s creation and it has grown at almost an exponential rate. It’s all up to whether the leaders of Google want to go in that direction.

Bing is part of a big and powerful company too.

Long-term we will see the rise of novel agile innovative new companies barely noticeable now. Like Google was in 1999 or Microsoft in 1976.
