Does suspending a Parallels Desktop session cause it to run in the background and slow down my Mac?

I use Parallels Desktop to run some programs that are only written for PC on my MacBook Pro. I can’t tell whether I should shut down the program (and Windows) completely or suspend the session? I only use it infrequently, but I hate to have to reboot Windows every time I do use it. Thoughts?
