What are some other animals I can "safely" put in with carnivorous turtles?

Asked by Storms (811points) April 1st, 2010

I can’t find any straight answers as to what fish/other marine animals I can put in the tank with my turtles (besides “other turtles). I realise that when it comes to living creatures there is a significant chance of something going wrong but I want to know what generally works. We’re not talking Snappers here; I realise nothing lives together with a snapper. So far I have a bunch of yellow cichlids and one rosy red in a 55 gallon tank with my Painted and RES turtles and they can’t catch them. So what else lives in fresh, warm water that can’t turtles catch that won’t fight with the cichlids. One idea I already got was certain species of perch.

Maybe some sort of crayfish or crabs?

Really big goldfish! Our turtle “kept” one of the feeder fish we gave her as a friend and now it is as big as the turtle! lol!

I tried putting in a large gold fish and the turtles started taking shots at it. The turtles are also used to ganging up on crustaceans and making a meal out of them. In my experience if it’s not a turtle and they can catch it, they will destroy it. I even tried an extra large crayfish named Slim Jim and they went to war until I put him back in the river.

I kept a large goldfish in a backyard stock tank with a red-eared slider. They seemed to get along OK.

It is important to note that the goldfish did eventually disappear. However, I suspect it was due to a colder than normal winder rather than the turtle having himself a feast.

Plastic fish.

@YoBob How would a cold winter cause a fish to vanish? I can’t imagine a gold fish large enough to discourage a foot long Slider.

@ChazMaz Err… Well, I already have plastic plants and that WOULD decrease the bioload of the setup… Guess I’ll get to work on an android fish.

@timyobobewen
I think @benchazmazdrew is saying that the goldfish migrated to warmer places.

@rebbel He said he kept them in a tank.

@benstormsimew Well, he was about 5–6 inches long and lasted for about 3 years. It is true, however, that I never saw the body…

The only thing that could defend against a carnivorous turtle is a carnivorous fish….Pirhana!
