Is anyone familiar with this religion/myth?

Asked by generalspecific (1874points) April 2nd, 2010

I read it somewhere a while ago and now can’t remember what book it was in. Some kind of indigenous religion I think. It said that humans used to be giants with like 108 ribs or something, and that was the age of goodness and everything was nice. With every age or era they gradually got smaller and more corrupt and unhappy ended with the age of destruction (or something).
It’s kind of vague but I just can’t remember, it’s been a while. Tried googling different combos of words but no luck there.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I am not sure, but the number 108 has significance for Hinduism. Try there. Good luck :)

108 was a randomish number, but I don’t think that it’s Hinduism because I think I would have remembered that or been able to find it easier in my books. Although, I could be totally mistaken. I’ll just keep looking :)

the only ‘giants’ i know of in religion are the so called annunaki, but its more of a conspiracy theory/madness than a religion. has a lot to do with this 2012 stuff.

annunaki/nephilim

The only thing I can find is Enoch’s Book of Giants, which is a part of the Dead Sea Scrolls. I don’t see anything about a large amount of ribs, though.

Sounds like Norse mythology.
This is closest to what you described, but there are some interesting stories here and here

Reminds me of Norse/Greek/European myths (tons of giants, formorians, etc), but I don’t know any that fit that particular set of things off hand. I can’t shake the feeling I’ve heard something like that in Native American/American Indian stories before but if I did I can’t find a proper reference to give you. Maybe slavic or russian folklore – but giants weren’t really popular there iirc. Anyway sorry I couldn’t give you more and good luck!

There are also giants in the Bible (Goliath was one). They were called the Nephilim, I believe.
I haven’t seen anything about rib count, or their becoming corrupt, so I don’t think it is Judeo-Christian.

I believe there is some reference to that in the Quran (Muslim holy book) about tall people, or giants who were actually a good civilization and died out. It could also be mentioned in the Torah.

@poisonedantidote and @filmfann have already mentioned the only giant myth I know of, the Nephilim. They were said to be corrupt and so are probably not what you are talking about, because they were the product of angels mating with human women (Genesis 6:4). They were giants (Numbers 13:33), and The Book of Enoch tells of how the fallen angels, their fathers, taught humans about warfare, agriculture, tool making and many other technologies.

Turn out it was Hinduism, I was referring to the Chatur Yugas: http://www.vaastuinternational.com/sg_chatur_yugas.html
Although I can’t find any site that goes into as much detail as the book I read, I’ll have to continue to search for that as well. Thanks to all that tried to help :)

I’m not all that fond of ribs, but I highly recommend the New York Strip at Ruth’s Chris. There may really be a god, and I think he’s working the grill at Ruth’s Chris.

Could be from the final episode of “Lost”
