Does your local news have a female Asian newscaster ?

Asked by Pretty_Lilly (4660points) April 2nd, 2010

I have done quite a bit of cross country traveling lately and I’ve noticed that no matter where I travel to,,,the local news always have at least one female Asian newscaster.I would understand big cities with large Asian communities (NY,Frisco etc,etc ) I visited my aunt in Nebraska and sure enough local news have an Asian reporter.
Is there a reason why they’re attracted to that profession ?

To make it big you have to start small.
Aspiring anchors often take a smaller town job to earn experience and graduate to bigger things.

I don’t have one where I come from. But yes, in many places I have seen quite a few Asian female newscasters. Must be because they are so pretty, and hardworking.

@Parrappa Yeah but she always gets the “Shi**y” assignments ,in one episode they would not let her in at a ritzy hotel !
@mrrich724 I understand LA as there’s a large Asian population but Maine,Mass ?? ,,,Seattle has 3 of’em !!

Yes – at least a few here in Seattle! We also have African American newscasters and weathermen.

I don’t think we do here in Memphis. Although, I don’t watch local news much. We don’t have many Asians at all in Memphis.

@figbash Yeah, I seen the ones in Seattle, they’re kinda rough looking ! They’re usually so cute & tiny !

Some of your comments indicate racial stereotyping and insensitivity. Ex: They’re usually so cute & tiny and Is there a reason why they’re attracted to that profession?

In answer to your question perhaps you should think about why Caucasian people are so attracted to the profession of journalism… Why would it be any different for Asian reporters? Not to mention that there are many many more Caucasian reporters and somehow that is not odd but Asian reporters are??? It seems to me as if you are just not used to seeing Asian people.

No. I agree with @RedPowerLady , btw.

I’m not entirely certain that I even have “local news”. I do like Tricia Takanawa on Family Guy, though. She’s kind of cute.

@RedPowerLady & @meagan !! “SIGH” I just knew I was going to get answers by “Holier than Thou,Political Correct,I Haven’t Got a Single Prejudice Bone in My Body People” I need to ask forgiveness from the Fluther community as it appears if I have offended a color blind, without sin, individual as yourself!
“NO” it is not odd there is so many Caucasian newscasters as I guess you have not noticed that the majority of the US population is “White” then Hispanic and Black
Therefore they are represented accordingly in the media !!
Asians are a small minority in the US except for large concentrations in certain cities ! That’s why I though it was odd !!
Yeah,,I can see how that can be stereotypical to say that about Asians as they are mostly known as being so tall and huge !!

This reminds me of a friend of mine,he’s a full blooded Native American and quite often he’s reprimanded on the internet by Native American wannabes (1/64th Cherokee,Blackfoot etc, etc) for his offending, stereotypical comments toward the American Indian community,,,,usually they begin with the cornball phrase “As I Native American your comments offended me deeply ” the funny thing is my friends looks like a Native American from the 1800’s (his words not mine so save your BS)
and the funny thing is the political correct idiots couldn’t be any whiter !

Perhaps you should look at it from another angle. What makes TV stations hire Asians so often? No one is forcing the TV station into hiring Asians. They are responding to what they perceive as what the market wants. So, TV stations think that their viewers want to see an Asian as their anchors, reporters, etc.

Just as an aside, as others have put less gently, you could have probably worded your question better. I understand you don’t like having to constantly be on guard for “politically correct” statements, lest you offend someone. I also understand and believe you when you say that you aren’t prejudiced against any particular race, group, etc. I really do. It does take a lot of, oftentimes, pointless effort to make sure things are PC-safe. However, if you aren’t willing to put effort into what/how you write about a subject, you can’t be all that surprised when people respond the way they do to certain parts they don’t agree with.

@bobloblaw Points for at least making an educated counter point !

After a lifetime on Futons they are probably more comfortable than most on the “casting” couch.

@Pretty_Lilly I’ll take a stab at why you might see Asians in Nebraska on TV, probably it will sounds less than PC, not my intent. I am guessing the black and Hispanic population in Nebraska is pretty low, and probably the Asian population also. Nebraska in my mind is a very white state, I might be wrong in my assumption. The news station probably likes the idea of having a minority, even if they are not forced to, and it happens to be an Asian person this time. She might have taken a job there, but actually lived or grew up in in a bigger market, which can be difficult to break into, or it is possible she did grow up there of course. It is possible that they chose a minority that they assumed the market would still relate to, even though we don’t like to think that way.
