How can I get rid of neck pain?

Asked by lrk (757points) April 3rd, 2010

The right side of my neck has been hurting for a few days—specifically, right about where my neck meets my shoulder. I’ve also been having some headaches on and off that seem to be related to this.

Any ideas on fixing this? For what it’s worth, I don’t think it has anything to do with sleeping funny—I made sure to sleep on my back last night, and I woke up feeling fine; my neck started hurting a few hours later.

It’s hard to diagnose referred pain. You could have a nerve impingement elsewhere that is causing the pain where you feel it. If it’s interfering with the quality of your life I think you need to see a doctor.

Or a chiropractor.

@marinelife I don’t know enough about the subject to offer advice myself, but I have heard people warn that chiropractors should be kept away from one’s neck.

I control mine by limiting the time I spend with my mother.

Try using a different pillow.

Try seeing a doctor

I live with chronic neck pain, the only thing I can tell you to relieve your pain is to chop off your head.
I sleep in a Tempur Pedic bed with special pillows, acupuncture, chiro, stretching, yoga, you name it I’ve tried it and I’ve tried it for years. Somethings help lift the pain but it only helps temporarily.

All of you in that one little bed? Maybe there’s the problem.

See a chiropractor. This is the kind of pain in which they specialize. There are different kinds of chiropractors who use different methods. I know from years of experience the kind of chiropractor to which I need to go. For me it’s one who, in layman’s terms, “cracks the bones” (it actually feels great when they do it, in spite of the name). That may or may not be best for you. I would suggest you ask around and even call and ask to speak to the doctor and tell him or her (I’ve been to both) that you are thinking about coming in and ask what you can expect. For my own experience, if I am having neck pain or headaches, I go to the chiropractor.

Have you lifted or pulled anything heavy with one arm recently? Think back.
If so, then time and the amazing ability of your body to heal itself will see you right.

See a chiropractor…...the body does heal itself. The question is how much pain and discomfort do you want to endure? If this is giving you a problem, there is probably more wrong than just this.

Whatever you do, don’t go to a chiropractor. Do you know a good masseuse?

plethora's avatar

30 years experience and nothing but success with them says see a chiropractor, especially for neck and back pain

davidbetterman's avatar

Never ever ever never use a chiropractor.

dpworkin's avatar

Oh, Lordy, now what do we do?

davidbetterman's avatar

Rub your neck and try a jacuzzi.

jazmina88's avatar

lobotomy.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Acupuncture for any pinched nerves and then practicing good posture and footing will help.

My neck hurts sometimes ,too.Maybe it is caused by your wrong sitting position. It may also because you have lower your head for a long time. You may need to see the doctor.

Physical therapy is your best bet.

@davidbetterman LOL….ok maybe I’m missing something. Why do you say never use a chiropractor. Must be a practical reason. This isn’t a deep question…:)

@plethora I went to a chiropractor once when my back was acting up. He adjusted my neck also and I walked around for 3 days thinking that my head was unscrewed. It was really bizarre—I didn’t like the sensation so I never went back. Some people swear by their chiropractor, which I don’t have a problem with for stuff like back pain, but I won’t go back.

@Rarebear Yeah, some like em, some don’t. My experience has always been very good. In fact, it was an MD, my ex’s gynocologist, who referred her to one years ago for back pain and she got such immediate results, that I decided to go for tension headaches and got the same result. Went today, in fact, because left index finger had been tingling for three days, she adjusted my neck and the tingling went away. Glad your head didnt fall off..:)

@plethora I’m an MD and I refer select people to chiropractors. I make sure that they don’t have serious disk disease first.

@plethora My brother in law had a bike accident and went to the chiropractor for a pain in his neck. That night (after being treated by the chiropractor) he became paralyzed and had to be hospitalized. he could barely breathe, couldn’t swallow, and had to be retrained to do all these things.
It took months for him to get better. He was never the same. He died within 20 years at the age of 40. Left behind 3 children and his wife.
Never go to a chiropractor.

@davidbetterman Very good reason. Thanks

This is a very old question, and came up in my inbox by the guy above who is advertising the chiropracter. In reading my response above I wrote that I will refer select people to chiropracters. That is no longer the case. After learning more about chiropracters I have decided that they are dangerous, and anybody who goes to one goes at their own risk. I now refer all my patients to physical therapists who I used to refer to chiropracters.
