How do I get the smell out of a silk jersey dress?

Asked by johanna (895points) April 6th, 2010

I recently bought a second hand Diane von Furstenberg silk jersey dress and even thought I have had it dry cleaned twice it still smells (it smells from under the arms….so to speak). The tag says dry clean only – do I dare wash it in the machine?

Have you tried Fabreeze?

I’d definitely not wash it in the machine! Maybe you can try a different dry cleaner? Sorry, that’s the best I’ve got. Or just let it air out for a few days.

I handwash silk.It will sometimes leach alittle color but nothing too bad.I would try it because you have nothing to lose at this point.

There are products specifically made for hand washing pure silk.. Tenestar, I think. Perhaps that might help?

Sprinkle some baking soda on the problem areas and let it sit over night. Next day shake it out. Pat it well if some of the baking soda got into the weave. Hopefully this will do the trick.

Baking soda is a great idea, and also try Febreeze. Spray it on the areas you want cleaned, then put in the dryer on fluff only – no heat.
