Will eating only broccoli for 8 days straight be harmful to my health?

Asked by windex (2932points) April 8th, 2010

I’ve tried losing weight (changed lifestyle, went vegan for 1 year, exercised blabla) and succeeded

I’ve tried building muscle (a lot of protein, free weights blabla) succeeded

I’m trying to lose the fat while maintaining the muscle mass I’ve gained.

I know it’s not healthy, and too much of anything is bad. But I’m trying to make weight for something by next Friday. (I don’t care if I gain the weight back, I’m gonna start eating healthy again after this)

But will I experience any issues if I eat Only broccoli (with diff dressings)
-while working out (regular stuff I do) plus a lot of cardio (which I’m not doing at the moment)

besides the obvious [insert fart joke here]

Wow. The short answer is probably not, on the other hand, you shared not much other than your desire to eat broccoli & lose weight in a week. What does your doctor say? Are you still overweight? Do you have any known health problems? Do you have a history of constipation? Is this a wrestling thing? Are you on “The Biggest Loser”?

Nobody here is probably actually qualified to answer that question and keep you safe. That said, a vegetarian diet for a week shouldn’t kill you.

The dressing will overcome any benefit from Broccoli as a rule, They are usually high in carbs. If you want to lose fat, you have to burn it off, not diet it off. I eat a lot of Broccoli and Broccoli sprouts, but certainly not that exclusively. I have very little body fat, but it is due to daily exercise, and a diet low in processed cars (as against a “Low Carb Diet). I eat high amounts of fat plus protein from seafood and a little chicken but no carbs that do not come from fresh fruit and vegetables. Nothing, absolutely nothing in the way of processed carbs. I have trouble “gaining” weight that isn’t muscle, not losing it.

It would be better to eat some lean meat along with the broccoli and leave off the dressings.

You see, already we have well meaning but conflicting (health-wise) advice. Most modern research advises against red meat. For various reasons. The only reason that I avoid it it is the extremely long digestion time required when compared to various types of seafood. I still like an occasional rare steak though – but as a luxury, not a part of a healthy diet. I also like a good Cornish Pasty or a beef and Burgundy casserole – but they do digest a lot faster although are less nutritional.

I don’t think so…
but remember, you need a balance nutritions for your health.
so sometime, carb or fat not so bad :D

You should eat the broccoli without dressing for sure, and you will certainly be missing out on some nutrients, especially protein, but it’s only eight days, not the end of the world. The biggest problem I would think would be that you might not consume enough calories, which not only might lead to things like being too weak to do things you normally would, passing out, or just being sleepy, it could also cue your body that you are starving. Which means that your body will start turning everything it can into fat for storage, which is the last thing you want when you start eating more normally.

Also, most efforts to dramatically lose weight in a short time, like to make weight for wrestling or for whatever else, are unhealthy. Short term it may not matter much, but it’s not a good idea to do it regularly.

Try the cabbage soup diet. It’s pretty effective for short term weight loss…

It might if you have low thyroid hormone. Broccoli and some other cruciferous vegetables tend to lower thyroid stimulating hormone, especially if it is undercooked. I know this because I was eating broccoli a lot (like every day at two meals a day) and actually got symptoms of low thyroid. Low thyroid does run in my family, and Broccoli just exacerbated it. I curbed the broccoli and thyroid went back to normal. Here is a link about foods that lower TSH.

Do not ask Fluther about a possibly damaging health practice – ask you doctor. We have no idea what your current state of health is and it is dangerous for you to take advice from the likes of @ChazMaz that video is hilarious

i would definitely not do this. broccoli used to be fine with me and i loved it so much but now i cant eat it or i get bloated. and i’m talking like…8 pieces makes me bloated, bad stomach ache, and then i get heartburn. of course this might not be the same with you but it seems to me like broccoli is a food that is very fibery so therefore hard to digest….your digestive system might go into overload, ya know?

The tiny amount of dressing you will be using will not overcome any benefit from the broccoli.

@davidbetterman The tiny amount of dressing you will be using will not overcome any benefit from the broccoli.

Here you go again – deciding what other people will and how they will do it. To begin with, many people don’t use a tiny amount, they tend to slather it on, this is why there are so many overweight people – they don’t limit themselves to tiny amounts. Even so, quite a small amount of salt, sugar, fat and preservatives contained in most dressings will negate the health benefits of Broccoli.

thanks, yes I understand the comments about dressings.

Some people just Drench their “healthy food” in those things. : P

I would say I am in OK shape, but I’ve decided not to do this. : (

I’m just gonna follow a healthy diet (that worked before) and just accept the fact that I’ve been lazy so far this year…(should’ve started sooner)

Thanks for all the input.
