Can some people's smart arsed smarmy answers sometimes drive you away form fluther?

Asked by Mat74UK (4662points) April 9th, 2010

Is there a cliche forming?
Are you in it without noticing? Take a look?
Are you not in it and can see it?
I’ve been here a while and noticed a few pockets of it!
Which / whose are you in?
Is this what ended wis.dm?

I see things but it all interests me.

I like smart arsed people much better than I do tight arsed people. I’m more of a smart asser myself.

plethora's avatar

@Silhouette OH yessss…...same here!!!

Silhouette's avatar

@plethora Smarty pants unite!

Check the blog. There will be a Town Hall meeting.
If you are frustrated with smart ass remarks or anything else you really want to attend.

To receive the answer to your question: Pull my finger.

Mat74UK's avatar

Whoo hoo it got Moderated for a minute but your smarmy assed answer unlocked it!

wundayatta's avatar

Name names and provide examples or I’ll assume you’re just blowing smoke from you know where.

gailcalled's avatar

Don’t mean to be dense, but how do you form a cliché? Do you perhaps mean “clique”?

Mat74UK's avatar

@gailcalled there we go again!
But yeah that’ll be the Stella I’ve drunk

gailcalled's avatar

@Mat74UK: Is there a clique of people who enjoy murky language? If so, count me out.

What’s a Stella?

faye's avatar

Sense of humour required!

Silhouette's avatar

@gailcalled Isn’t calling a group of friends a clique, a cliché?

HungryGuy's avatar

All your base are belong to us!

Cruiser's avatar

Not only is there the 10K mansion but there is the Smarmy Army….To enlist all you have to do is pull my finger!!

plethora's avatar

@HungryGuy Looks like you’ve had a little Stella yourself, buddy..:)

HungryGuy's avatar

Ich wil den Klavierstein!

Mat74UK's avatar

@gailcalled – Strong European Lager!... it works a treat.

Mat74UK's avatar

sniffs (feel for me) my finger is outstretched!

gailcalled's avatar

@Mat74UK: I heard somewhere that people actually both drank and enjoyed strong lager.

@Silhouette: A clique is not synonymous with “a small group of friends.” A clique implies exclusivity and unwillingness to let others join in.

Mat74UK's avatar

@gailcalled – OH believe me I’m enjoying it! Eight pints so far! Good job I called at the shop earlier.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Cruiser Come here. ’-)

Seriously, the smarty-assed answers don’t bother me near as much as the dumb asses here do. There’s one who I’d be surprised if they could tie their shoes! Sad thing is…you can’t fix stupid!

I know some on here way better than I do others. So I kinda “hang out” with them. Seems like we get newbies on here every day. Which is fine…I welcome one & all. But if I don’t know someone, I don’t talk to them at first. I just watch.

MarcoNJ's avatar

Smarmy? New one for me. I’d consider myself a smart-ass but not smarmy.
I’d rather someone call me a d*ckhead before Smarmy. That just sounds wrong.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@MarcoNJ Smarmy to me is a guy who has his hair all slicked back with all kinds of goop, who leers at you, makes nasty remarks to women, etc. That sound right to you?

Mat74UK's avatar

@jbfletcherfan – yep that a smarmy bastard!

MarcoNJ's avatar

@jbfletcherfan I picture some High Society snob making half-assed, corny remarks about my lower-class self….that’s what I picture when I think of Smarmy.

Or I should say, wanna-be High Society snob. Pretentious clown. Is that close?

gailcalled's avatar

@Mat74UK: Eight pints? Your poor bladder (and the calories?)

Mat74UK's avatar

@gailcalled – funny you should mention that!

plethora's avatar

@MarcoNJ Me too…smarmy sucks

Captain_Fantasy's avatar

The internet is serious business, people!

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Cruiser yes…...

@Mat74UK & @MarcoNJ…yes, you’ve both got it down perfect.

Silhouette's avatar

@gailcalled It’ was a wee joke. Very wee apparently.

Mat74UK's avatar

@jbfletcherfan & @MarcoNJ – I never put class into it but yes you are probably right!

davidbetterman's avatar

I never even noticed that there’s a blog…

Mat74UK's avatar

@davidbetterman – A blog? wheres that? OH I get it BLUE blog or RED blog?

Neizvestnaya's avatar

My experience with fluther has been great so far and if there are any clusters of people who seem like they know each other well then they’ve not been offensive, that I can tell. As for what ended wis.dm? I believe it was less than three individuals who decided to coordinate together to aggressively troll with no intervention from the site holders. Mods would’ve been great there. I can put up with a bit of grammar harping here in exchange for the better all around atmosphere that’s maintained.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

Drive me away? Uhm, no. But you are free to drive wherever you like.

uh wait a sec… that didn’t sound right

Coloma's avatar

I’m thinking of a really dirty city with rats and trash and hookers.
Smarmy people in the seedy part of town. lolol

What blog?

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

Removed by Fluther moderators. is the s-w-a-r-m-i-e-s-t-est answer of all.

and a “clique” I’ll never be in

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

No no no no… I take that back…
Removed by Fluther moderators is NOT the s-w-a-r-m-i-e-s-t-est answer of all.

You have a question that needs editing
...is the most bestist *super*s-w-a-r-m-i-e-s-test-i-s-t-e-c-u-l-a-r answer of all.

faye's avatar

@wilma at the very top of the home page it says blog. It is the fluther blog- fun and interesting.

wilma's avatar

Thanks faye!

davidbetterman's avatar

It’s at the very top of all the pages..and on the bottom of the pages, too!

AstroChuck's avatar

Why is it that my first thought when I saw this that this question is about me?

TexasDude's avatar

There are a lot of funny smart asses here, and there are a lot of hypocritical, pretentious dick head smartasses here. The former are enjoyable sometimes, but the latter are quite annoying. Nothing bothersome enough to drive me away though.

Adagio's avatar

I’ve always thought:

smarmy adj = description for those who suck up to others for the purpose of engendering favour

faye's avatar

I see it as a guy in a too small black suit with a huge bling belt buckle fighting with his gut. Add a shirt unbuttoned too low and a few chains, brylcreme hair and Elvis sideburns, tobacco stained teeth and a leer. Yes, I have met this man!

YARNLADY's avatar

I don’t like it one bit .It’s not my site, so I can only flag the worst ones and ignore the rest. Some people just seems to need an outlet for their ‘fun’ and sor some unknown reason they choose a supposedly Question and Answer site to do it. I don’t know why they don’t just join in one of the ‘silly sites’ that is set up just for them.

davidbetterman's avatar

As long as the remark(s) are not disparaging I see no harm in having a little fun. You must remember that some people probably fluther drunk and/or stoned.

wundayatta's avatar

@AstroChuck I am thinking the same thing. I really don’t like weaselly cowards who throw around all kinds of spurious accusations but refuse to stand behind them. There has been far too much of that around here lately. Makes it a very unpleasant place to be. And the mods don’t seem to care.

ucme's avatar

I used to be considered a smart arse butt i’ve put that behind me now.Shows cracks in one’s character.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@AstroChuck you’re not smarmy. You’re sometimes snarky.

@faye perfect description.

Jude's avatar

It tends to get old sometimes – the dumb ass comments, I mean. Lame.

plethora's avatar

Quoting @Silhouette at the beginning of this thread: I like smart arsed people much better than I do tight arsed people. I’m more of a smart asser myself
Any site is going to have smart asses as well as tight asses. The definition of a sense of humor is not the ability to tell jokes, but the ability to see humor in almost anything and to put a twist on it to highlight the humor. However, those who don’t have a sense of humor always fail to comprehend the twist or to recognize the humor that is spread throughout life. I’m sorry they lack that ability and I am well acquainted with it because my daughter is exactly like that. No ability whatsoever to see humor in anything. Unfortunate, but she’s been that way all her life. So I recognize those who have similar “dysfunctions” and try not to bother them with my humor. But sometimes I just can’t let the humor pass without making a comment. Makes life much more pleasant….at least for me.

phoebusg's avatar

Really short answers without any informational value do drive me away, yes. I’m here to learn and teach where I can but mostly learn. If I only wanted humor I’d watch some more george carlin – oh wait, it’s educational humor too! Casing point.

Jude's avatar

@phoebusg GA!

There’s smart/funny and then there’s lame.

plethora's avatar

@phoebusg I think that would be “case in point”. There….a little educational value for you.

But your answer is interesting, primarily because it is the complete opposite of the reason I am here. Why would short answers drive you away? Can’t you ignore them as not useful to you? At least half of what I see on here is not useful to me. I just go on to the next comment.

I’m here neither to learn nor to teach. I have a real life and a real job that require my full intellectual and creative abilities. I’m here to play and be entertained….period. I enjoy the conversational value, and I love the humor of some us. If it weren’t for the humor and the occasional meaningful comments about important feelings or positions, I’d leave.

@jjmah True, but probably the smart/funny comment is also lame to another person…and vice versa

phoebusg's avatar

@plethora thanks for the correction, appreciated. I notice this trend, even though the site is about collective knowledge. It is tiring when you have to continuously skip and skip, meanwhile missing some good answers inbetween.

But as the case in point above, carlin’s humor has both very high informational value and entertainment. If people’s humor resembled more of that it’d be ideal.

You do a lot of learning in your entertainment. You just taught someone something, whether it was your purpose or not, and you’re constantly picking up information and learning. But my point is that it would be better not to have to dig through as much to get to the information.

plethora's avatar

@phoebusg Ok….I get your drift. Agreed!

wilma's avatar

I don’t mind the short, to the point answers. Sometimes I don’t have time to read a long dawn out essay. Sometimes I do.
I also don’t mind the smart ass quips, as long as they aren’t hurtful or making fun of a serious issue.

Berserker's avatar

@HungryGuy—They set us up the bomb!

Well it’s the Internet, it happens everywhere. I bitch alla time but I’m probably no better than the next fucker, so meh.
For the amount of things we find that we dislike, there’s always a good balance, we also find something to enjoy.

Sorry to get all corndog I guess, but it’s true. Can’t always have it the way we want it.

Cliques, yeah there’s some. Most online communities have em. AB was bad with that shit. But then maybe I was in a clique too. I denno. I’m certainly not in one here though. But if they stick to themselves and don’t try to diminish or otherwise make my stay here a living hell, fuck it.

But yeah, Captain Fantasy said it best; intrawebz0rz, seeriouz shizzbazz! Just have fun, and don’t let people step on your feet, and at the same time, don’t be a toe grinder yourself.

wundayatta's avatar

Well, no more funny except on silly questions now. Sigh.
