Do certain scents conjure up memories for you?

Asked by Rangie (3664points) April 10th, 2010

The scent of cedar, brings up the memory of the first day of school, when everybody is sharpening their pencils. What a great memory.

Yes, they are even better than holding a photo at times, as your mind floods with memories when a specific scent is in the air!

@ZEPHYRA And the best part of it is, you never seem to lose them. I still have a jacket that belonged to my mother. The scent has long since gone away, but somehow I can bring it to my mind, and have other memories from that.

Scents and music are the two most evocative stimulants there are.

Definetly! I have lots of scents that are attached to certain memories. Some of them go waaay back to when I was very little! ^_^

@DarkScribe is absolutly right. My nephew bought a 1948 car, and I opened the door and sat inside, and the smell of the leather was exactly like the smell of my dad’s 51 Cad. It really took me back!

Chanel No. 5…. my mother getting ready to go out. I wish I could wear it, but the expensive perfumes smell like cat pee on me.

Hmmm… I’m sensing some deja vu…

Oops, my bad. I meant to give this link which is the same question asked back in November.

Rangie's avatar

@ParaParaYukiko odd that the moderators would let it on again. I am one of those newbees. Only been here less than a month. So I would say to you, skip it and move on to another Q. Perhaps another newbee would like to participate. Thanks for the info.

ParaParaYukiko's avatar

@Rangie Of course. But I would also suggest that you get into the habit of looking back to see if the question you’re intending on asking has been asked before, recently or not. Obviously people will still answer your question, but perhaps those who had answered the same question previously would avoid posting on your thread. Plus, it’s kinda cool to see what people had already said back then.

@ParaParaYukiko It is also cool to see what the newer folks have to say that have never seen this thread. I might also suggest, if it is too familiar to you, you might want to go to another Q. Are you a moderator?
