Why don't some of my apps work over wireless?

Asked by yannick (985points) March 9th, 2008

I connect to the internet on my laptop (iBook G4) via our iMac, which has internet sharing turned on. This works fine for browsing the internet, however for a few months, Mail, Limewire and Azureus have ceased to work over the wireless. They still work when I am plugged directly into the network cable. Any ideas on what is wrong here?

This is a good question mcbealer. The easter bunny chocolate isn’t. And the question is well written with lots of details.

And I wish I could help you yannick.. But I don’t know much about networking under OS X.

Thanks johnpowell, even if you aren’t able to help me, the fact that you read the question is appreciated! haha… Hopefully someone might have some ideas as to what is wrong with my network settings. Fingers crossed…

It could be a few things. The firewall settings on the sharing machine’s airport would be my first guess (all the apps you list use ports other than 80). The version of X and systems specs would help if that is not enough direction.

@ drive_by_dev: You are a genius. Or rather, I am a fool. I feel like such an idiot, but am still very pleased to say that you were right – it was a simple matter of tweaking the iMac’s firewall settings. Thanks for the push in the right direction, it is very much appreciated!
