Why do so many (just about all) late model Volkswagen Beetle cars have plastic flowers on their dashboards?

Asked by gondwanalon (22872points) April 10th, 2010

I haven’t done a scientific study on this so I don’t have exact information but it seems like well over 90% of all shiny new model Beetle cars have flowers on their dashboards. Bright colored (red, yellow, orange etc) Beetles are most likely to have flowers. What is this all about? A girly chick thing?

It was part of the marketing package when the new Beetle came out. There was a stick-on vase that came with the car. I’m not so certain this is part of the package for newer Beetles but it’s available as an accessory for certain.

It is a feature that comes with the car. When they were first released, VW thought it would be trendy to build a vase holder into the dashboard.

I don’t know about the flowers but I do know they are popular with old ladies, real estate agents, and girls that wear large, flowing wigs. I didn’t know about the flowers.

I just think that’s cute.

vw’s were big in the 60s..part of the flower power. tradition.

IIRC, VW’s have always had bud vases on the dashboard and the flower decals are just a modern extension of that I guess. My grandfather has a brand new bug and it has the bud vase but no flowers on the dash.

Because it’s a chick car.

Cute, but I hope they are detachable!

…better question: why are they always daisies or sunflowers?

AstroChuck's avatar

@unique- Because Lavender Hydrangeas are too masculine a flower.

I keep geraniums in my dashboard vase, and it’s because real flowers dies too quickly, so we have to go for artificial. Mine aren’t plastic, they are silk. Also, I no longer own a VW, my current car is a Chevrolet Uplander minivan.

My friend has a bright red rose in the dashboard vase of her ladybug-red VW beetle. I love my friend dearly, but that high a concentration of cuteness is a strain on my nerves. Thank goodness her practical side worries about resale value, or I’m afraid she might have got big black dots painted on the carapace.

Herbie would die of shame i’m sure.

All VW’s come with the flower…not sure if they still do.
