How old is the pop restaurant food phenomenon "chicken wings"?

Asked by josie (30934points) April 12th, 2010

I remember as a (very) young man being on leave in Las Vegas. Myself and some of my warrior buddies went to this place called the Elbow Room, where they had preserved chicken wings mounted on the wall on plaques, like trophies, for people who had eaten 20 of them or something. At the time, I thought the idea of eating chicken wings was pretty novel, since before that I figured they were one step above offal. How far back does the popular bar food preparation of wings actually go.

Right after the chicken came out of the egg, I remember going to a “wings and ribs” shop in the early 60’s. That shop had been there since the 40’s.

Chicken Wings first appeared in a restaurant at the Anchor Bar, Buffalo, NY, in 1964.

I remember clearly when I first saw Buffalo wings in New Jersey. My younger son was 11 months old and we thought a chicken wing would be great for him to try. We gave him one and he started bawling. Then we tasted it! 1983, that would have been.

@simpleD has it. The birth of Buffalo Wings at the Anchor Bar. It’s still standing, too!
