Getting 7 hours of sleep but still exhausted. Any advice?

Asked by helloimcat (92points) April 13th, 2010

Hello Fluther,
I’m 21 year old asian-american female, averagely healthy, if a little over-weight. I need 8 hours of sleep a night, which I get most nights, but I still find myself exhausted around 11 and around 5 pm.
Any suggestions?

Perhaps you are in need of something to eat to boost your sugar levels, and keep you going.

Have your doctor check for vitamin deficiency – sometiemes that can lead to feeling fatigued.

Do what i and about 100 million other people do…...drink coffee. its the caffeine that gives us the drive to move forward. you may not be a coffee drinker, so do like all the other younger people do and drink Mountain Dew. its loaded with caffeine. if that is not your fancy, then try one of the energy drinks. they, too, are loaded with caffeine. my son use to own several coffee shops in the northwest. during one visit to him, he offered me two chocolate-covered coffee beans. he gave me no warning and the coffee beans had me wired for a whole day. since you already have enough sleep, i suggest going the caffeine route. give it a try and see what happens.

@john65pennington no reason to get yet another person hung up on that stuff. :)

Boost up your exercise levels to get rid of the lethargy. It works great.

Get 8 hours sleep.

Maybe you just need more sleep.
Everyone is different.

7 hours is adequate for me once in awhile, but, left to my own bio-rhythems I will sleep a solid 9 most of the time.

There is no heroism in sleep deprivation, listen to your body.

A diet too high in carbs can cause this – increasing sugar levels could well be the last thing that is wanted.

Go to bed earlier (before midnight) and try to wake up naturally (no alarm) to see how you feel. Also I noticed yoga gives me a LOT of energy and helps me sleep better.

You could have vitamin/iron deficiencies a others have mentioned as well.

Everybody needs different amounts of rest. Try eight hours as studies have shown that most of us sleep in four hour cycles.

I’ve found that regulating my diet helps tremendously. The more fruits and vegetables I eat, the better I feel. When I eat lots of sugars and carbs I often feel drowsy and lethargic. Also, exercise never hurts. Even if you walk to the store, garden, or do a 20-minute exercise video you’ll feel immensely better.

MONSTER ENERGY DRINK!!!

haha jk. Try taking a day off and relaxing to lower your stress levels. Or maybe you need more sleep yet?

Get more sleep. I usually sleep about 10–16 hours.

@Draconess25 From your picture I assume you are a teenager. Teenagers need more sleep than others, but the OP probably does not need that much sleep being 21.

Go to bed earlier and avoid caffeine products.

I recently saw on tv a new study discovery that said that teenagers may actually need to sleep till noon. And they figure it last till they are about 21 years of age.
However, it could be also the time of day you sleep. According to sleep studies, the more hours you sleep before midnight the more sleep (rest) you are actually getting. So if you sleep at 1 am but wake up at 8 am., you body will not be so refreshed as it would if you slept at 11 pm and woke at 6 am.
I know if I wake up any time before 6 am. I am useless most of the day unless I go back to bed and take a nap. If I sleep till at least 6:15 I am great the entire day. I think you need to find the hours that work best for you.

@dog nailed it…get exercise…an hour a day and in no time you will be energized enough to go full tilt all day long.

Draconess25's avatar

@tragiclikebowie Does 19 still count as being a teenager? I guess so, since it still has the word teen in it….

Get eight hours sleep and take a multivitamin.

I’m a 28 year old military veteran and I weigh about 185 ibs. For that same issue I was advised to see a sleep apnea clinic and diagnosed with Sleep Apnea two years ago. Now I sleep with a Sleep Apnea machine, which helps my energy level greatly. You may not be breathing well throughout the night. If you snore a lot, or have long breaks in your breathing while you sleep, this could be you. Try going to your doctor and asking them if a “Sleep Study” is necessary for your situation. Hope this helps. God Bless!
