Looking at the Sigma 10-20mm. Any other ideas?

Ken Rockwell (kenrockwell.com) does some in-depth reviews of cameraas and lenses. He likes the Canon 10-22mm if you have a Canon DSLR. Otherwise he likes the Tokina 12-24mm for build quality and speed. He thinks the Sigma feels cheaply-made and is a little less sharp. Check out his full comparisons here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/digital-wide-zooms/comparison.htm

The Sigma is wider than the Tokina, which is great, but it doesn't have a great warranty.

Thanks for the help Bob. I've been to Ken rockwells site, and (imho) find some of his reviews flippant and ill-considered. I've seen rave reviews for the Sigma 10-20 that specifically site it's high buld quality. He sures know how get Google to work for him though. However, the Tokina isn't a lens I'd considered, and I really appreciate you pointing that out for me.

For what it's worth, I bought a sigma zoom lens for a vacation around 4 years ago; by the end of trip it had noticeably deteriorated -- zoom wouldn't hold, etc. The picture quality was good, however.

a professional photographer whom i trust regards the sigma lenses as superior, optically, to the canon lenses. he also regards nikon lenses very highly.

Wow, sounds like it might hit or miss with Sigma... hmmm... I have a nikon d80 so maybe I'll save my pennies for a real Nikon wide angle lens. Have to read some more reviews I guess. Thanks for taking the time to help me out. :)
