If you could live forever, how would you live?

Asked by silverfly (4055points) April 15th, 2010

If death was impossible and you were guaranteed life forever, would you try to help people by doing selfless but dangerous tasks? Or would you use it for personal gain/pleasure?

In the immortal (ironic) words of Freddie Mercury.“Who wants to live forever.”

chels's avatar

I’d do everything. I’d be completely and utterly careless.

Probably personal gain and pleasure. Do I still feel pain? I would still want to avoid pain, especially if death was impossible. When I got bored of power and pleasure I might became selfless and altruistic; probably in a hundred years or so.

susanc's avatar

I wouldn’t have to choose. I’d start with one thing and then, even if that was working, try something else. La la la.

@ucme im with you on this one, i dont want to live forever, for any reason.

Couldn’t I do both? Live selfishly at times, and other times spending my time helping others. And since this is fiction, I want to be able to keep a young body, even at age 150 so I will be better able to help others (and be a cougar and attract those young 90 year olds).

That’s mean I’ve lost my chance to live in heaven. But the good side is that I’ll have more time to atone all my sins, and unlimited opportunity to do many things. I might want to gain all knowledge in this world,or maybe build my own utopia.

I would try being a superhero until I got bored with the outfit ;)

I would start off irresponsible, but then I would come to the conclusion that I should use my ability for good. Kind of like real life lol.

If i had to live forever, would i have to be a vampire?

beautifulbobby193's avatar

I would like to be a vigilante and just spend my time cleaning up scum off the streets. A very, very violent vigilante with zero tolerance.

I would only want to live forever, if my loved ones could live forever too, but in reality, I think that would be excruciatingly boring after, say, 1 Googol years. (Maybe even sooner than that) But for the sake of fantasy, I’d say that I would take advantage of my indestructibility, by helping every person I could possibly reach, all while dressed like Aeon Flux.

If I could live forever I would make the most of it, learn everything that I can, have fun, help people get their life together. There is so much I would do.

ZEPHYRA's avatar

Never would I want to do that, I can’t think of anything worse than that. What a curse that would be!

CMaz's avatar

I would never get my yard work done.

ChocolateReigns's avatar

I would travel the world first, then on the second time around do it again only as a missionary. The scorpions and cannibals wouldn’t be able to kill me. But I would eventually want to die so I could go to Heaven.

Listen to a song by Hazakim called Shemayim of Gold.

*Shemayim = heaven
This song is Biblically backed as most of Hazakim.

I think that even if you could live forever, you could still have a tormented soul if you chose to be reckless.

I’d find some way to transfer that trait to someone more deserving. I don’t even want to see 70, much less be immortal. My knowledge and skills are totally obsolete as it is. Being immortal would make me a parasite, a burden on the world, a waste of food, water and oxygen.

“Forever” is an AWEFULLY long time. I think in all that time, I would try it all, get bored and end it all.

slick44's avatar

@ChazMaz .. How much yard work could you possibly have?

CMaz's avatar

@slick44 – The problem would be. That I would push it off till the following weekend.

And, having an eternity of weekends…

If I could live forever I certainly would slow down and stop trying to squeeze so much in the short time I thought I had here. I’d then have to plan on getting a bigger house with a huge garage to put all the stuff I will ultimately inherit over the years. Hmmm where to start? I’d probably get bored with birthday parties after the 1st 150 or so plus the ever changing guest list would be a bit of a chore to keep up. So sooner or later I would get a bit restless and need to cause a bit of a ruckus to keep myself entertained.

Find another “Highlander” type to do me a favor and chop off my head?

AstroChuck's avatar

Can’t I do both?

wundayatta's avatar

I think I would do what I can to be of service to others. Over time, that would take me everywhere I want to go and it would lead me into places where I do everything I want to do. The key thing in living forever is meaning. You have to make meaning out of your life, for you now have the greatest of all the greatest gifts in life: a life with no end.

People are even more important when you live longer. Love is more important. Making new friends is more important. Maintaining intimate contact with individuals and with humanity itself will be essential. Otherwise you will soon feel like an alien, and will be desperate to give up your immortality. Humility is key to all of this.

Imagine how much Lurve you would accumulate.

If I could live forever I would want the ability for my body to completely be immune to the vacuum of space, not having to breathe oxygen, heat immunity and wield the power cosmic all the while traveling as fast as the speed of light on my spaceship surfboard and just cruising around the Universe checking for any other signs of life, It would definitely take up a few trillion years of my time.

downtide's avatar

I think that would be the worst curse I could possibly imagine. I would probably end up doing both (pleasure and altruism) just to relieve the endless boredom.

kittybee's avatar

I don’t think I’d be motivated enough to do anything, ya know, I’d just be putting everything off until tomorrow. I’d imagine the first million years would be pretty though, but then when the sun starts to expand onto the earth and I’m still not dying. Ouch.

Bluefreedom's avatar

I’d engage in philanthropy and live the life of luxury. If I could live forever, I could surely find time to live both of these lifestyles.

HungryGuy's avatar

Assuming that EVERYBODY lives forver, there’s no need to help people by doing selfless dangerous tasks. I’d just enjoy life; travel, create art, write, learn to play a musical instrument, learn to fly, etc., etc., etc.

evandad's avatar

Quietly and away from the masses.

Hexr's avatar

I would do both. I would do selfless things when possible/necessary, and then I would live selfishly other times. I could only do many selfless things before it gets to a situation like in Bruce Almighty (when he’s god and becomes too overwhelmed with requests to fill them)

thriftymaid's avatar

Pretty much like I do now, quietly and simply. I don’t think I want to be alone in this “forever” scenario.

@ChazMaz… I would be happy to help you with you yard work. :)
