How do you get really nice abs without losing weight?

Asked by chelle21689 (7907points) April 15th, 2010

I’m already pretty thin… 5’3, 120 lbs… I can see my abs and obliques but it’s not very toned like it should be especially the bottom part of my abs. Everyone says to lose more weight but I don’t want to. Even when I was 115 I still had some problem with tightening my lower abs.

How do celebs like Beyonce or Kim Kardashian keep all that meat on their bones while having a toned tummy?

I am 5’1” and have always been thin. When I started working out, I was 85–90 lbs. In good shape (working out several times a day in different ways), my weight increased to 105. The point is, muscle adds mass. You want to burn fat and increase muscle mass.

Get yourself on the same exercise they do for the US Army Rangers. I have not looked but I am sure you can find a video of the ab workout. It will destroy you for the first couple of weeks but your abs will love you for it.

Running and swimming are both very good for your abs. I used to go on a daily run and that got my abs in excellent shape ! But now, i just do my 2 different daily workouts. One day i do my core ( abs) the next i do everything else. For my core I do leg lifts, cherry pickers, sit ups, crunches and the plank. You must do each in increasing repetition if you want to make any progress though. First do a set of each with a set number of reps. Then increase the repetitions for each next set of each exercise. Do this for a few weeks and you should be where you want to be !

P.S.

You should also do at least a 30 minute warm up workout before you start ( jumping jacks, a short jog, anything that will get your heart pumping). And when you’re done you should do a 20 – 30 minute cool down.

It’s one of the most difficult areas to work and if you want to see the musculature you need to remove the layer of fat over the abdominal muscles. You may not be overweight but hold some fat there. Do planks, core exercises, use a medicine ball and almost anything that works the core. Some people just have better genetics but you can build muscle with work. Good luck,
