Is it possible to connect a laptop to a PC just so I can use the keyboard on my laptop?

Asked by whyigottajoin (1149points) April 16th, 2010

My friend has a keyboard that’s really loud and I have a laptop with a keyboard that isn’t very loud. I was wondering if it’s possible for me to hook up my laptop-keyboard, while still using her computer.

Yes. But, any way you do it you will have to jump through a few hoops. The easiest way would be with Symantec PC Anywhere installed on both computers.

@UScitizen Is that a free programme?

Windows built-in Remote Desktop and Ultra VNC are free alternatives to PC Anywhere

Those programs actually control the remote computer, you would be using the desktop via the laptop’s keyboard and screen.

Another approach is sharing the keyboard & mouse.

Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems without special hardware. It’s intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own display

You can buy a cheap key board at Walmart for about $12 so why bother going thru all the BS !

@jaytkay Oh that’s awesome! Thanks!
@Pretty_Lilly Yes I know, DUH! But it’s her keyboard and I’m low on cash. I’m not gonna wait until she decides to get new one. =S

@whyigottajoin- Do worry about it. I took care of that for you. :)

Edit: Don’t worry…

I’ve never paid more than $3 for a keyboard (thrift stores and used PC parts places), and often scavenge one from a system that was destined for the trash. The thrift store up the hill from me usually has at least a dozen keyboards for cheap.
