What is an "Emergency Alert"?

Asked by Cooldil17 (485points) April 18th, 2010

While going through the settings on my HTC Droid Eris, I noticed there is a check box option for an “Emergency Alert” I’ve looked online but have been unable to find out what that exactly is….

I believe that means if your muncipality or state has an emergency alert system and you opt in, you would be notified (probably by text) if an emergency arose.

Or it could mean that whenever something bad happens with the owner of the phone, the police/medics can inform the person that you put under the Emergency Alert button.

Oh – that’s another good possibility.

@rebbel At least on my phone that is called the “In Case of Emergency” (ICE) contact(s) and it also has a separate setting in Sounds for “Emergency Tone”

The help for Emergency Tone says “Selecting ‘Alert’ shall enable the alert tone associated with Emergency Dialing….”

So my guess is if it’s enabled it makes noise when you call what in the US would be 911 (Whatever your country’s emergency number is) (It also has a setting to vibrate instead on my phone)

Edit: Why Can’t I bold the middle of a word…

It probably alerts you of emergencies, like zombie apocalypses and such.
