Goldfish need about a 7.2 – 7.6 range. If the PH is lower, it could be due to excess waste in the water. This raises the Ammonia level, which is not a good thing.

If the fish is suffering due to the PH level, it might be slimy, lethargic, not eating, have some blood smearing it’s fins, then it might die.

Regularly changing the water should improve the PH level, and the ammonia level. It can also help to add a small pump, that would introduce air into the water.

Goldfish don’t care if the water is hard, or soft. Hardness is the amount of dissolved minerals in the water, and it varies in different areas.

zlata30's avatar

ok so i need to make my ph level a little up right

eden2eve's avatar

yes, a little bit. If you clean out the tank it should help.

zlata30's avatar

i think my tanc is clean i change the water about 3 days ago

eden2eve's avatar

Try putting fresh water in. Let the water sit for a day to eliminate chlorine first. Then measure the PH again. See if that helps. Then if not, try getting a small air pump and putting that in.

zlata30's avatar

i use the water from petco store.and i have ph solution to put ph up or down

eden2eve's avatar

I see. You can do that, but keep watching the PH to see how long before the water gets bad.

zlata30's avatar

its not seems to be badit just ph coming from 6–6.4. and i think its not enough for goldfish. But the fishes are very happy

eden2eve's avatar

That’s good. Hopefully they stay healthy.

zlata30's avatar

i think they are. do you have fishes?

eden2eve's avatar

I used to have some. For awhile we bred tropical fish. One time I even saved a fish’s life by giving it cpr. I had left them with a friend, and their little boy dumped a big bunch of fish food in the tank and the fish was laying on it’s side looking dead. I put it in fresh water and squeezed it’s sides and it recovered. We had a lot of fun with the fish.

zlata30's avatar

wow this is first time for me to have fishes

eden2eve's avatar

It’s pretty fun. Just don’t forget about them because they won’t last long without daily care.

zlata30's avatar

its sad that they are not lasting long ((((((

eden2eve's avatar

Goldfish aren’t very long lived. Later you might like to try some other fish. Some of them have more personality. One time we had a shark. We had a great big tank, maybe 65 gallons, and he swam back and forth in that tank, hitting the sides with his head. We were sure that he was brain damaged from all the head banging. If we forgot and left the top up he would jump out and flop down the hall. He would eat out of our hands, and come to see us when we walked up to the tank. He was a riot.

zlata30's avatar

actually i see something in one of my fish something on the side like a white spot

eden2eve's avatar

That’s not good. It’s called Ich or Itch

zlata30's avatar

actually i think red one

eden2eve's avatar

you can get a treatment from the store to put in the water

zlata30's avatar

its like little tear on both sides and i think i have lifeguard medicune

zlata30's avatar

but this fish sweems so fast that its difficult to see

zlata30's avatar

is fancy goldfish live longer

eden2eve's avatar

I don’t know

I would ask at the pet store

zlata30's avatar

ask a pet store about what

zlata30's avatar

are you still here

eden2eve's avatar

ask them if fancy goldfish live longer, and what is their lifespan

zlata30's avatar

i see i dont know what my golddish has because when the other fish was sick she was sitting most of the time, but this one is moving so fast

zlata30's avatar

and looks like she have some black spots in her head or maybe is nothing because she is kind of fast to be sick i think

eden2eve's avatar

sometimes they move fast because they itch and it’s like scratching. They’re not as sick as could be, but that could change if it’s a fungus or something dangerous.

zlata30's avatar

so fungus is dangerous?

zlata30's avatar

black spot in her head is somethig or its nothing

eden2eve's avatar

it could be part of the coloring of the fish. Do you remember if it was there before? I know that fungus is usually white and kind of puffy. Don’t remember about black spots. It’s been a few years.

zlata30's avatar

i dont remember if it was there?

eden2eve's avatar

maybe should take it in to the pet store and ask them

zlata30's avatar

OMG but they are very fast fishes and looks not sick like the fish was sick before

eden2eve's avatar

that’s good

zlata30's avatar

so i dont know i just to worry about my fishes

eden2eve's avatar

I understand. I would check with the experts, then you don’t have to worry.

zlata30's avatar

what fish you recomend to have for quiet long time

eden2eve's avatar

tropical fish. Some of them, like sharks and catfish are long lived.

eden2eve's avatar

Oscars are.. but they can’t be with many other fish because they are very aggressive.

zlata30's avatar

sharks are dangerouse fish :((((((

eden2eve's avatar

betas and goramis are long lived. Small sharks aren’t dangerous.

eden2eve's avatar

Angelfish are very fun and are long lived. Very pretty too.

zlata30's avatar

angelfish is tropical fish

eden2eve's avatar

yes

They are flat on the sides and tall. They have long tails and fins. I used to breed them. they are beautiful and graceful. There are many different kinds.

zlata30's avatar

i see i am trying to find a picture of angelfish but i cant find

zlata30's avatar

thankyou for your help i have only 10 gal tanc

eden2eve's avatar

you could do a few tropicals in that size of a tank

zlata30's avatar

and i have a tanc like 3 or 4 gallons

eden2eve's avatar

it’s fun to breed fish… we had fun breeding the angelfish

zlata30's avatar

how many tropical angel fish per gallon requet

eden2eve's avatar

Here is a link for tank sizes.

http://www.firsttankguide.net/capacity.php

to breed you need a 15–20 gallon tank.

Check out this link.. some beauties here.

http://www.fishlore.com/Profiles-Angelfish.htm

zlata30's avatar

so i cannot use my small tanc for it

eden2eve's avatar

not for breeding.. but a ten gallon will hold angelfish

zlata30's avatar

i mean i have another tanc for 3 or 4 gallons i believe

eden2eve's avatar

oh.. that one wouldn’t hold angel fish. But maybe a couple of neon tetras.

zlata30's avatar

neon tetras is tropical fish too is long live fish

zlata30's avatar

i think in this small tanc i can have only 2 neon tetra fish

eden2eve's avatar

yes that’s about right

zlata30's avatar

i see i think it shouldbe fun. do i need a heater

eden2eve's avatar

I can’t remember, but I know they don’t need as much heat as some other fish.

zlata30's avatar

i see i think i should try some

jerv's avatar

This is why I like Zebra Danios. As far as pH and temperature are concerned, they are like cockroaches with gills. I tested the pH one time and it was around 8.9. Our heater was screwy so the water temperature varied between 60F and 78F. They seemed to not notice. When the tank cracked, we took them to the pet store for a better life than a leaky tank and then kind of forgot about the tank that we mostly drained.
We left that 3 inches of water for over a month before we finally got to it and then had to stop draining the rest of it when we noticed little things swimming around; baby Danios! No food, no heat, no aeration, pH of who-knows, and the little bastards still survived!
They can deal with predatory fish well too since they are quick enough to escape.

Kinda pretty too :)

zlata30's avatar
