Why do you think that in the 5 star restaurants, they have mostly all waiters instead of waitresses?

Asked by Rangie (3664points) April 19th, 2010

Almost every 5 star restaurant where I have gone, have male waiters, assistant waiters, water fillers, coffee toppers, etc. In fact there are usually more of them than patrons. Why no waitresses?

I wouldn’t know ‘cause I don’t go to places like that but that hardly seems like it would be the pattern. I’d imagine since those kind of places cater to the capitalist bozos, they’d hire waitresses to be ‘the pretty’ hanging around. Or maybe they think it makes them superior to hire men instead of women – either way it’s dumb and obnoxious.

Your_Majesty's avatar

They’re durable, faster, stronger, etc, etc. I think more or less it’s affected by culture itself.
You will find that most employees in 5 stars Japanese restaurant will be female rather than male.

@Doctor_D your men sound like tires

Axemusica's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir are you saying you don’t like good tires?

marinelife's avatar

I think it is plain old prejudice at work. For the same reason that women are paid less than men for comparable work (about 70 cents on the dollar).

Rangie's avatar

@Doctor_D I have never been to Japan, but there must be some reason. Come to think of it, I don’t think I have ever seen men serving in Hooters? lol

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

Funny, I’ve noticed exactly the opposite.

@Doctor_D That’s the first time I’ve ever heard people described as durable. Ha!

bob_'s avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir Wonder if they also kick them around a bit to test them.

njnyjobs's avatar

The reason can be attributed to seniority (in a workplace). If you will notice, such male workers are also up in their ages, meaning that they have grown old in their profession at the same establishment, not giving other people the opportunity to work as their replacements. Back in the days, the gender bias was probably one of the reasons, but it doesn’t hold true at this time.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@Axemusica Wouldn’t know as I’ve never changed one, tee hee.~

Axemusica's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir oh but I can bet you a sum of money that you’ve paid for new tires for a vehicle at one point and noticed a drastic different in handling, no?

rangerr's avatar

I’m with @jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities on this one… every place like that I’ve been to has had mostly female workers.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@Axemusica I’ve never driven a car. My brother was killed in a car crash when I was 17 and I never learned to drive.

Rangie's avatar

I have noticed this mainly in SF, LA, and cruise ships.

Mat74UK's avatar

Waiters don’t suffer from PMS!

njnyjobs's avatar

@Rangie cruise ships present a different scenario than land-based establishments. The workers onboard are usually out at sea for weeks, if not months at a time. For that reason, manning agencies fill the positions with predominantly male staff to avoid possible “problems” that may occur between male and female staff. It may also be economical for the ship operators to have predominatly male workers.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@Mat74UK ah yes, definitely a reason to never hire any women ever…forget waiters, women shouldn’t work period~

Rangie's avatar

@njnyjobs I never thought of that.

Mat74UK's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir – No I think the have their uses! They’re very good on a returns desk one week out of four!

Buttonstc's avatar

Because the men look good in tuxedos as befits a snooty, expensive place ?

Rangie's avatar

It could be that when a waiter is frazzled, they don’t look as frazzled as a waitress. The waiter always seems calm and in control, where I have notice waitresses scurrying about retracing their steps, with a frazzled look on their face. It has a tendency to make the patron a bit nervous.

bob_'s avatar

Hell, I don’t know why we even let you gals vote.

Heh.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@bob_ So that Bush can become president? ~

Trillian's avatar

@bob_ Yeah, just remember, you have to go to sleep sometime….

Mat74UK's avatar

@bob_ Sounds like a threat there! Stay alert!

Rangie's avatar

@bob_ let us vote? We out number you guys, and getting larger. Did you know the mortality rate for male babies is getting bigger? One day it will be “Ladies Rule”
Then we can work in those fancy restarurants. yeah! Not.

That’s interesting. Most professional chefs are still men, so maybe there’s still gender bias in the most prestigious parts of the restaurant industry. Working as a waiter at a 5-star restaurant is more of a career than a job, so it may be harder for women to break into these positions. In lower-level restaurants (with higher turnover), the waitstaff seems to be pretty even, but now that I think about it, every restaurant I’ve ever worked in has had a male chef.

Mat74UK's avatar

@RangieWomen working in restaurants generally do get larger.

Rangie's avatar

@Haleth No facts here, but I think most professional chefs are found in the most prestigious restaurants, may be because it is a choosen career, which they take pride in. Where the women have had to cook for their families, etc. and just somehow fall into becoming a chef. Not necessarily a chosen profession.

MissAnthrope's avatar

The upscale places I’ve worked seemed to enjoy having “eye candy” on staff. And the pretty girls make loads more in tips than I do, which kinda blows, especially since I’m a really competent server.

Rangie's avatar

@MissAnthrope Maybe you should step up to a high class restaurant. I would bet those men in tuxedos make more than the pretty girls.

MissAnthrope's avatar

I could probably rock a tuxedo.

Rangie's avatar

@MissAnthrope no doubt. go for it.

PacificToast's avatar

Perhaps because you can have more uniformity, females have hair that generally has more variation than boys. Maybe they assume the boys can carry those plates too.

Trillian's avatar

@Mat74UK Zing! Ow! Wow, why ya gotta lash out?

tinyfaery's avatar

I live in L.A. and I do not have the same observations. However, I do notice certain establishments favor one sex over the other. But I think it evens out.

casheroo's avatar

@Haleth This is sad to say, but it’s only a gender bias because men can handle being chefs more than women.

More men are professional waiters because they make better waiters. They’re usually stronger, can be on their feet longer, less emotional…being a waiter is very stressful and draining.

I work for an HR department that hires for a 5 Star. Really, only guys come in and apply and actually have the necessary experience.

What came first, the chicken or the egg?

mattbrowne's avatar

Money. On average men are more greedy and more interested in visible status symbols.

mrrich724's avatar

@mattbrowne

what does your statement mean? how is being a server a status symbol in any way? where does the greed come in to play?

And a majority of the people who I see eating at these 5 Stars are 90 year old women. So . . . what?

mattbrowne's avatar

@mrrich724 – A status symbol compared to all the waiters serving in 4 star restaurants. A female waitress might say to herself, well, I’ve really got a nice boss, there’s a subway nearby, and the folks in the kitchen are wonderful. It’s not that important to earn more. Why get a new job.

Sophief's avatar

Yes I have noticed that, the waitresses just seem to be stood at kitchen doorways. I think men probably look smarter, and have better posture, when they pour the wine and place the napkin.

tinyfaery's avatar

Again? Oh, gawd.
