What is wrong with my headphone jack?

Asked by Arp (3516points) April 19th, 2010

I think I have a problem with my laptop. My headphone jack doesn’t like headphones!

When I put my headphones into the jack, they stay. At least, as long as I keep pressure on them. As soon as I let go, it pops out instantly, and my computer switches back to main speaker sound.

I have tried using 3 different pairs of headphones, and all of them have the same problems. Please help, I have really nice headphones, but my laptop is a meany :(

Is it that the hole is too big or the headphone jack is too big?

They seem like they fit, but then it pops out :(

Actually, now that I look, it seems like the headphones dont go in all the way… There is a bit of metal exposed after I put it as deep as it can go. Weird.

You could try wiggling the headphone prong gently side to side to widen the contact point inside the input. No promises that it won’t potentially damage something though. It’s an old trick I used on my ancient walkman. Or, it could be that the jack is meant for bluetooth headphones, which are smaller by a smidge.

Have you tried using the line-out jack instead of the headphone jack?

Holy crap.

Turns out I just wasn’t pushing hard enough. I pushed harder and it popped right in.

Welp, this is embarrasing 0_o

Hopefully people as stupid as me will be able to read this to see the error of their ways :P

Sorry, @Arp – they will probably follow @Fred931‘s advice without hearing it.
