Help finding 80's movies (comedy) that were remade in that past 7 or so years.

Asked by rpm_pseud0name (8208points) April 23rd, 2010

I am tapping the collective to help me put together a list of movies from the 1980’s (preferably comedies) that have recently been remade (in the past 7 years or so). So if you know of any, could you let me know the original title & its remake title, with their release date years? Thank you.

I know there’s supposed to be a new Karate Kid coming out soon, but I can’t think of any that have actually been released.

Avatar is pretty much a remake of Pocahontas. Does that count?

@downtide I’d say Avatar is a remake (ripoff) of Pocahontas, FernGully, & Atlantis: The Lost Empire. As you can tell, I didn’t enjoy it very much. It’s harder than I thought, trying to find 80’s movies that have been released recently. It seems they are all coming out this year & next.

There are lots of re-makes slated for release this year.

Karate Kid (2010, produced by Will Smith – looks awful);
Clash of the Titans (in the cinemas now);
Conan the Barbarian (being made now);
TRON: LEGACY (2010);
The A-Team (kinda, not originally a movie);
Fame (2009);
Friday the 13th (2010);
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010).

Sad that the film industry is so devoid of creativity.

@martyjacobs, thanks for the list, although it doesn’t help much. I have to say though, the writers in Hollywood are filled with creativity, it’s the production companies that are scared to take risks. Why ask a writer to write something new & fresh that no one has heard of, when they could just remake (pick any movie from your list) because it made money then & it will make money now. Production companies are looking for guarantees on money making, that’s all they care about. To them, it’s not about making great movies, it’s about making money. Which is also why a lot of writers in Hollywood want to form their own production company, so they can have their original work get made without the big guy telling them no.

@rpmpseudonym It is difficult to find recent remakes. 13 Going On 30 was much like Big, but I don’t think it was a remake. I took a look at this list of great 80s comedies and I can honestly say that I would hate to see any of them remade. Could you imagine A Christmas Story remake? It just wouldn’t be the same.

The only one that springs to mind is Hairspray, 1988/2007

Run this search in Google: site:http://www.imdb.com/ remake. You’ll then have to refine the search (or look through the results manually) to find the 80s films. There doesn’t appear to be that many by the looks of it. Here are a couple:

Halloween (2007);
The Good Wife (2009, remake of The Umbrella Woman from 1986);

I agree that the producers/money men are to blame for this.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Currently, there are remakes being worked on, at different levels of production, of Oh God, RoboCop, Fletch, and GhostBusters. and, they are making another Pee wee Herman movie.

Movies the will be remaking – slight off topic from the question

Wall Street is getting that sequel
Red Dawn
Adventures In Babysitting
Arthur
Dirty Dancing
Escape From New York
First Blood
Footloose

Ghostbusters 3

Personally not happy with:
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
