Does anyone have an easy way to convert AVI files to a format that will go into iTunes and on my iPhone?

I download a lot of torrentsnof tv shows that I watch and I would love to be able to watch them on the go on my iPhone. But I cannot find and easy, and preferably free way to convert them.
