How can I convert a AVCHD (.MTS) file to a MOV file on a non-Intel PowerMac G5 or Windows XP pc? FREE?

Hi! I have a Cannon HFS10 and I want to get some video I took on to the web. I am having a hard time because I have an older G5 with Final Cut Express. I also have a PC, but it only has Windows Movie Maker. The video is in the .MTS format and FCE won’t read it. Can you suggest a technique or additional software that can solve my problem? FREE????
