Does lightning originate from the clouds to earth or earth to the clouds?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) April 29th, 2010

I saw a documentary on The Weather Channel that stated lightning comes from the earth and stretches into the sky. but, most all of the lightning strikes i have witnessed, appears to be lightning originating from the clouds and striking the earth. so, which is correct?
