How common is naturally beaded hair?

About 10 years ago, I had a friend who, the best way to put it, had naturally beaded hair. If you looked real close at each strand of his hair, it looked like it was beaded, or crimped. It looked like, if you took a strand of pearls & squished them flat. The hair was thick, then thin, thick, etc. It was very unique, I had never seen anything like it before, or ever since. It grew like this, naturally. Does anyone know anything about this type of hair?
