Any flat-footed women have shoe suggestions?

Asked by le_inferno (6194points) May 1st, 2010

I am flat footed and it’s extremely hard to find shoes that don’t cave over at the sides when I wear them. I usually need shoes with solid sides so they don’t easily get pushed down (they do eventually, though). In the winter, I have little trouble with boots, but once spring/summer rolls around and I try to find cute flats or sandals, nothing looks good. Maybe using arched foot inserts would prevent this problem? Anyone else struggle with this?

I have a pair of Birkenstock Bostons that I ought in 1989… to this day they are the most comfortable pair of shoes I own, and my go-to choice if I know I’ll be standing for any long period of time.

I just wear the ill-fitting shoes anyway. But I do notice that changing my walking patter helps– walking as though I have an arch.

Danskos are amazing. They are comfortable all day every day and have a specially designed sturdy footbed. They have a zillion styles, including sandals. www.dansko.com

Also, an arch-supporting insole is definitely a good idea no matter what brand of shoe you wear. You can get over the counter ones or see a specialist and have custom made orthotics (expensive but worth it if your feet cause you pain regularly). Insoles are tricky with sandals but for all other shoes can work fine.

Thanks everyone, all good suggestions. And @Facade I do that too, actually. But it’s a very conscious effort, so I often slip up and forget, lol.
