Victim of terrorism, what should I do?

Asked by OmegaGraham (115points) May 3rd, 2010

My girlfriend and I live in a fourth floor apartment. Last Friday night our living room window was smashed in by a full beer can. We were sleeping and thought at first that someone had broken into the apartment. We could hear someone shouting like an animal outside in an eastern european language. We are the only Irish couple living on our floor and maybe in the whole building. There are also groups of upto 8 hoodlums walking around the premises and hanging around about the place. The next day we were walking through the building and passed these scary looking foreign guys. One of them started shouting at us in the same foreign language. I don’t know any of these people and have never caused any trouble myself. We are now staying in a guest house down the road and cannot contact the landlord till after the weekend. We are scared and I’m really angry with the landlord for not spending money on decent security for the place. I’m not spending another night in the place but still have to go back to get all my stuff out. I know they’ll want a months notice and I need a reference from them.

Terrorism? At best this is vandalism with racist harassment.
Anyways, call the pigs police.

Terrorism is the wrong word.
But you are correct with your xenophobia tag.

@ragingloli Is right. Call the police and have them assist you in getting your things out quicker. Maybe they’ll be able to prevent this in the future.

Definately call the police. This should have been reported right away.

One word : Tazer !!

Um Terrorism? More like harassment that could potentially be racially motivated but it would be unfair to make assumptions. There may be a misunderstanding occurring that you are not even aware of.

Police would be the right course of action.

What a waste of good beer….

And the cops weren’t called right then because… why?

Any chance you had of catching any of these guys vanished into the night when no one reported it.

Also, drunks are not terrorists. Terrorists have a political goal. If they were terrorists, it would have been a bottle or gasoline with a burning rag in its neck.

Lastly, try not to classify the entirety of a ethnicity because of the actions of the drunkest of them.

This happened Friday. Today is Monday and Monday is over. No cops have been called at all? By anyone? For 3 days… and the landlord can’t be bothered that someone has damaged their property?

This just doesn’t add up.

Get your stuff out NOW. If it sits there unguarded with the window busted you could end up losing everything. Definately have the police there to assist you.

I am not a lawyer, but you may be able to make the case that the building was unsafe and therefore you can break the lease without loss of the month’s rent.

Call the police and tell them it might be a hate crime. – What you have described in most likely not terrorism. Do not let anything like this happen again with calling 911 (or your local emergency response number).

I called the police but they didn’t do much. Just took a look and left.

Irish? Irish??? And you’re Omega Graham? Omega?

4th Floor beer shot from street level? No way that breaks glass. Glancing blow at best. You, my friend are full of shit.

Sounds like you live in the hood. If I was in your position I would definitely get a gun.

Get a gun, move your valuables out, break your lease, and move into a nicer area. Also, you may consider some mace, or pepper spray if you’re not comfortable with firing a gun. You may even want to hire someone to move your stuff for you? But I’m pretty sure you can break a lease for reasons like this.

RandomMrdan's avatar

oh, and do all this while it’s light outside.

Not racism if you are Irish and the bad guys were speaking in an Eastern European language.
Not terrorism if just a bunch of assholes trying to feel important. Just criminal.
This situation is bad enough without screaming “terrorism” and “racism”. Calm down, file a written report with the police, notify your landlord that the place is no longer livable, get your stuff, and go. Sorry it happened. Ugly.

syzygy2600's avatar

@susanc so you know for a fact that no eastern europeans anywhere in the world hate Irish? I’m not saying he’s correct for assuming that it’s racially motivated, but it very well could be.
