Do Libertarians know History?

Asked by Rsam (586points) May 3rd, 2010

I want to know people’s thoughts about this blog-posting I found on the Campaign for Liberty’s website. It enrages me for its ignorance. and for other’s willingness to accept its ludicrously ignorant terms.

“Yet, it seems that just less than a short two and a half centuries after such ‘self evident truths’ were laid out in our Declaration of Independence, we as a nation, and as a people, have come full circle”

I like how this statement in particular utterly ignores that those “two and a half centuries” were actually less tolerant of human rights than any other point in American history. Ask a gay person. Ask a black person. Or a woman. Or a “coolie.” Or an Irishman. Or a White guy who didn’t own property.

Its all relative…. things were worse before and then got a little better…injustices are still being done… but its better…computers still get treated as slaves, and the different get labeled as mentally ill….and animals get eaten for food….rights take time. Animal rights, Disability rights, computer rights…ect into the future

…Excerpt… We occupy and own a continent rich in an incredible diversity of natural resources, yet we purchase the bulk of the energy fuels we use from a handful of the most barbaric nations on the planet, whose leaders and populations would have us choose between subjugation or annihilation if given the chance.

I didn’t know that Alberta Canada was that barbaric… Seeing that’s where a big portion of the Oil reserves in the planet are from….but then again we could be that bad..Seeing we enslave our young to schools for 18+ years….then make them fight for the Dishwashing positions and other employment…when they get told that the guy with the Ph.D. is the prep/cook supervisor

The American Revolution was about a bunch of English guys living in the colonies and making money out of slave-trading, drug-trafficking and all sorts of other illegal activities (even back then) not wanting to pay taxes to the Big Boss back home. It has nothing to do with what America became in the 2 centuries that followed, nor with what happened to the rest of the world during that time.

“Liberty” was just a euphemism for “we don’t wanna give you your cut”, just like “Democracy” today is synoymous with “US military interests in the area”. Look at how the US brought “democracy” to Iraq. It’s the same way in which the colonies were “liberated”.

It’s all a matter of perspective. I’m pretty sure there are people who feel that the black slaves brought over from Africa were “enlightened” and that they were given an “opportunity” to become part of the land of the “free”. After all, this can easily be proven by the fact that one of them ended up being President only 250 years later. Something that would never have been possible if his ancestors had not been given the wonderful gift of a free ticket to the New World. ;)

Things were different in different places, you know. Some things were better. Some were worse.

In short, you are guilty of the terrible crime of oversimplification.

@Rsam
I think the better question is: Do you know what Libertarian means?

Their knowledge of history does not reach back to 2008, when taxes & regulation were largely the same as today, but for some reason they became enraged circa January 2009. Hmmmm, what event might have touched them off..?

@jaytkay
You really think Libertarians just now got angry about taxes and regulations? Refer to my previous post.

Everybody has some knowledge of history, but everyone also has a different interpretation of it. Pick your ideology, left, right, whatever, and you can find a brand of revisionism to go with it.

Poor Donald, succumbed to the sound of his own voice and as happens so often in the bloggosphere he apparently has run out of relevant things to say and has become another victim of his own self aggrandizing messaging. Another Tea Bagger gone bad.

I think most self-described libertarians don’t know.

@jaytkay Not to start a monster debate or anything but I disagree and am sure most Libertarians are quite certain what they stand for. It takes a lot to abandon the main stream political party system as it is quite obvious they rule the roost and control all of the current legislature being implemented by our government. When all else fails and there is little else to turn to, by then a “Libertarian” is quite certain that their voice will be better served supporting the ideals of the Libertarian party and are again much more certain of their needs, ideals and goals than the ‘majority’ of the lemmings of either the Republican or Democratic parties IMHO of course!

@Cruiser When I wrote most self-described libertarians don’t know what Libertarian means, I was thinking of the “Keep government hands off my Medicare!” crowd.
